Wonderful rendition.

For a little kid, she's pretty good.

Are you familiar with the Hummel trumpet concerto?

Here's the third movement, which most "trumpeters" never even attempt.

The thing that immediately struck me was her placement of the mouthpiece to
her lips. She clearly places the mouthpiece to the right of center. It's
an unusual use of embouchure, but it obviously works for her. Her tone is
very good. I can only imagine how many instructors have tried to correct
her style into something more conventional. Hey, if Dizzy Gillespie could
allow his cheeks to expand like a bullfrog and play at his level, I figure
she should be allowed to blow out of the side of her mouth.

Love the look on the band director's face! He's looking at her like "holy
hell!"

That's the concertmaster, and he's a dead ringer for a younger Kelsey
Grammer. Did you notice the little wink he gave her before she started?

I did some research, and it turns out that is not the concertmaster, but
rather the evening's featured attraction. His name is Andre Rieu, and he's a
violinist from the Netherlands. He conducts the orchestra while playing the
violin, providing direction using the movement of his bow and violin, as
well as body motion. This was his concert, and he introduced the young
trumpeter to the audience as a special guest. The trumpeter is Melissa
Venema, and is also from the Netherlands. She was 13 years old at the time
of this concert.

I'm no trumpeteer (?), but I thought the placement was a little right
also. Didn't seem to bother her much.

I like the fact that she didn't try to embellish the arrangement by
adding a lot of bells and whistles to every other note. She plays it
straight and pure.

The Dutch are pretty much that kind of people.

careful there Johnny.......
"Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee."

I always preferred Maurice Andre playing the piccolo trumpet. These
days, when Wynton Marsalis is playing serious music, he's my favorite
trumpet player. Andre is still with us, thankfully.

Here's an oldie of Andre playing a bit of Bach. A bit more involved
than Taps.

You can actually like both, unless you only purpose is to be a pompous
ass.

Pompous ass is one of his finer attributes.

Yep, his attributes go downhill after that!

For a little kid, she is fantastic. She is damn good for a big person. I
played Trumpet and Mellophone for a few years. Wish I had been 1/2 that
good.

Remember, Harry is comparing her to Wynton Marsalis. Of course, Mr.
Marsalis was somewhat older than 13 in the YouTube vid.
