I like that phrase: “The best boat is your friend’s boat.” Neat idea and comes out to be about $100.00 a day (minimum) just pay and go. But for my location, and convenience, I'd still rather own mine. |

But for my location, and convenience, I'd still rather own mine. I know somebody who bought into this over at East Greenwich Marina in RI. He likes the idea and it fits his and his family's lifestyle. He's only had to wait for boat reservation once and that worked out anyway as he had a emergency. On the other hand, I've heard some real horror stories. The folks who run East Greenwich are great people so I guess it depends on who is running the operation as much as what kind of boats they have available. Having said that, I would think that a little more experience other than a safety orientation would be necessary. |

Well, some f those things seem fairly big, and I'd think there's be some type of qualification to take one out by yourself, that is, unless it's a charter type set up. But I would imagine that to be in the "clubs" you'd have to have to pass some type of orientation or tested qualification.. |

But for my location, and convenience, I'd still rather own mine. The general rule is, the more you use your boat, the cheaper it is. If you are only an occasional boater you would be a whole lot better off renting. For most people I know, $150 an hour plus fuel would be a bargain. In this ng, we have boat free posting. However, something like this could work for sailboats. If one considers the cost of upkeep and keeping her in a slip, etc. I think I prob pay about $3000-3500/yr for my old 28' sailboat to be able to sail her, maybe more if you amortize the original purchase price of $19,000 about 20 yrs ago and new sails and rigging etc. It might come to roughly $4500/yr. In other places with very high slip fees, this would be a very good deal. Our yacht club costs roughly $60/month but includes several boats we can use including a Hunter 22, a Drascomb Lugger, and a Flying Scot and many smaller Holders and a Laser. We also have use of a pool and a place to hang out. If I did not have a boat, I'd consider this to be a great deal. |

I'm thinking this is rec.boats, ans so I thought, eh, why not put up some boating posts, and seeing it is a "news group" how about some boating "news" for once. i thought it might be an interesting change of pace. |
