Hello,

I have a 1986 Alpha one drive on a Larson boat. Last year, I
performed the painful job of replacing the gimbal ring after one of
the ears cracked off. I did the engine removal type replacement.

When assembling things this year, I got stuck when installing the trim
position sensor and trim limit switches. I know the one labeled (TL)
Trim Limit goes on the Port side and the one labeled (TP) goes on the
Starboard side. I have a in dash trim gauge, so the TP sensor isn't
just a dummy sensor.

There is a semi-clear plastic disc (about 2" dia) with a hole in the
middle and 2 slots that accept the screws from the switches on the
sides of the gimbal ring. I only have one of these insulators. Does
any one know what side it should go on? I know it insulates the
sensor. Perhaps I lost the other one or is there just one insulator?
All the online stores with diagrams show the part as 85-63990 and only
on the starboard side.

Interesting. I don't have that on either side. Mine are 1990.

Thanks for the reply JamesGang. I talked to a marine mechanic today
and he told me they weren't entirely necessary if you have enough of
the waterproof grease compound packed into the undersides of the trim
limit sender and trim position sender. It's supposed to prevent
electrical flow from them to the gimbal ring.

One thing I didnt' replace last year that I wish I had were the wires
the go to the two senders. The insulation is starting to crack but I
was told the the time to replace them was when I had the bell housing
off last fall. Oh well, can't win em all.

I managed to pull some wire out, cut it off, and reattach it. The
insulation was badly cracked on both of mine. But I had the bell
housing out when I did it. And I had to cut the molded on "plug" in
half to get the wire out. I put it back together with some sealant.
The contacts in the units are removable and there is a small hex allen
screw that holds the wires in. The ends of the wires are tinned with
solder. You might be able to at least remove the sending units and
put some heat shrink on the wires. I packed both of mine full of
grease as they don't really seem to be well sealed.
