While this is a symbolic gesture, maybe it will be meaningful to some. The real apology for slavery is equal opportunity regardless of race, creed, sex or national origin. I think MLK Jr. said it best when he said " I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. " Race relations in the US is not perfect, but we have some a long way. -- Reginald P. Smithers III, Esq. This Newsgroup post is a natural product. The slight variations in spelling and grammar enhance its individual character and beauty and in no way are to be considered flaws or defects I wonder if Harry knows that there were Black slave owners also. Gee, Bilious, what percentage of slave owners in the USA were black? And why would you think I would want any different treatment for them? Actually only 24% of NC owned slaves. How about reparations for my family. My great grandfather walked with a limp from a Confederate bullet wound. How many people alive now, were slaves in the South? How much has it impacted them? My Great grandfather was Irish immigrant. Seemed like they had some discrimination also. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boO4RowROiw A large percentage of the people alive today have had ancestors who were significantly affected by slavery. Most families with ancestor from France, Germany, British Islands, and the Middle East have been in populations defeated by foreign armies. Many times these armies saw the defeated populations as spoils of war and sold the people into slavery. There are many books about the practice of slavery during these time periods. Additionally there have been many movies about slaves from these time periods; Spartacus, Gladiator, and Ben Hur are a few. The point being that everyone has ancestors who had the experience of being slaves or having relatives carried off as slaves. They did not see themselves as victims, but stood up and corrected the situation using the experience to develop better families, communities, and governments. |
