Mystic, CT and Maine
Mrs H wants to go northeast for our next trip. She's got Mysic, CT on
the mind for some reason. One of her friends mentioned it as a nice place to visit. Anyone know anything about the place? Also, we plan to take a trip to Maine for a week sometime later this summer. Mrs H would like to go on a whale watching excursion. Any info on Maine out there? I've been to Acadia National Park, by motorcycle, but the weather was too bad to get all the way to the top of the hill at the park. Maybe it would be worth a visit. Ideas? -- John H ************************** "That's not a *baby* kicking, beautiful bride, it's just a fetus you feel." (Harry Krause truism) |

The big draw in that neighborhood is a casino, though - that is what most local hostelries are geared for. It's been far too many years since I visited Acadia, though I imagine if you wanted to you could devise an itinerary that hit several boatbuilders along the way. |

At night they light fires along the route in baskets in the water that are stocked and stoked by gondoliers all dressed in black. Really "spooky". Music is played from a sound system along the riverside. People walk along the river ooohing and aaaaawing. Saw lots of youngun's sitting along the route swapping spit like you and I may have done with our dates 50 or 60 years ago. We used to call it submarine races down my the Lake Michigan shore. Oooops. Hydraulic valves creating water patterns in the air, colored by lights and set to the sound of music. Mostly Strauss, as I recall. Only works at night when the skeeters are out. Jungle Jim's Gator Farm was another down there, but I never went. Pine Island is by Ft Meyers. Believe it or not I've never been to the Dells, except I drove through there once on the way to a fishing cabin at Castle Rock. Told the kids "There, you saw the Dells. Now shut up." Is Water Fire something like that? It's a kind of water based light show. They anchor fire pots out in on the Providence River, put some wood in them and light them. Sometime's it's really spectacular and can be very pretty. Most times it's just - well averagely entertaining. But it does support a good cause and that's important. |

My mother and sister stalked him and found out where he lived. Back in 2005 while up there for a week we went on a wail watching tour of Gloucester, MA. We went across the bay towards Providence. Seaport, Aquarium, Groton, Watch Hill and environs - plenty to see and do. I'd be glad to be a tour guide. Might even take a little boat ride if you have the time - we can head out towards The Race, around Fisher's Island and up to Point Judith or over towards Montauck. Hey John, you should get with Tom and I when you come up... *You could spend a day in Essex too, and hit Mystic the next morning. Downtown Essex on the water is great in the summer, especially on a weekend. The Grizwold Inn is a great place to eat, you can have Sandwiches at Olive Oyl's by the water... The Essex Steamtrain and Ferry ride from Deep River to the Shoreline and back is pretty cool too... If in Mystic I would certainly suggest the Aquarium, and the Seaport. If anything, we should all get together for dinner somewhere or a bbq at my place. Good Lord, John. TAKE 'EM UP ON IT!!!!! Hell yeah, free tours, free bbq, free boat rides, wow! Next someone will offer a free driveway and electricity for the trailer! Not likely... :) |

Which, some to think of it, might be a good way to go - you can see all the sights and touristy stuff. I could meet them up in Marblehead - show 'em all the good stuff. |

I think BAR meant "across the bay towards Provincetown." That's the tip of Cape Cod. Providence is in RI. Didn't notice that, but I think you're right - P-town. Yankee Fleet probably - they run a tour like that. Gloucester is in Massachusetts, unless there is another, less known town with the same name in Maine. Bet you didn't know there are 13 Woodstocks in the United States did you? :) |
