9-11-01?

I was at work at my company, working on database programs and so on. My
fishing buddy (also a computer geek) had the day off. At appoximately 8:45am,
he calls me at my desk and told me to do whatever I can to get to a TV, because
a plane crashed into the WTC... Me and a bunch of others at work went running
into the lunchroom and flipped on the TV.

The WTC was a great place. I was stationed on Governors Island in NYC in
1980-1983 and have been up in the WTC many times. I knew some USCG Reserves
who were NYFD and NYPD officers that perished on 9/11.

I was in on a departmental meeting in our 4th floor boardroom. (we're one
hour ahead of Eastern time)
Our Regional Comptroller received a call on his cell phone and I could tell
something big had happened.
After the meeting I went by a tv and saw the early footage.

We were watching TV, worried to death about our daughter who lived only a few
blocks away and frequently caught the subway under the WTC.

Not much comment beyond that. I'm still pizzed at the large number of people
and groups who either hoped this event would destroy the American way of life
or who scheme to use this tragedy to advance repressive, reactionary,
philosophies. Both groups hope to benefit from public fear. No winners anywhere
in sight. 9-11 was only the first day of a continuing disaster.

unbe****inleavable

????????

I said that:

1. Some groups hoped to bring down the American way of life with the attack.

Is that what you find "unbelieavable"?

Al Qaida and others hailed the attacks for the damage they did the US. So, how
is that not believable?

I said that:

2. Other groups are playing on public fears to try and advance repressive and
reactionary philosophies.

How would that be "unbelievable"?

Every time somebody applauds the suspension of the right of habeus corpus, they
refer back to 9-11. Every time somebdy agrees that we need to surrender our
rights against unreasonable search and seizure, they cite 9-11 as the reason.
Every time somebody says it's no longer important for people accused of a crime
to be awarded a speedy trial before a jury of their peers, they use 9-11 as an
excuse.
Every time somebody says that it's perfectly OK to try civilians before a
military tribunal, 9-11 comes up again. Every time somebody thinks that it's no
big deal to hold people in jail indefinitely without any charges being filed,
we hear all about 9-11.

Maybe you live in a black hole in outer space? You aren't aware that these
arguments are advanced almost every day?

The terrorists knocked down the buildings and killed 3000 people. We tore down
our own Bill of Rights, all by ourselves.

Both groups, the terrorists and the repressive reactionaries are attempting to
capitalize on the fear that 9-11 spawned.
If you cannot, (or more likely "will not") see that, it isn't my perspective
that's flawed, renegade.

9-11 was a disaster, and the consequences of the disaster continue.
Or did you think it was "over" on the 12th?

That you apparently have no opinion beyond the one you have been told to have
is equally "unbeleavable" to me.

Between upsetting our western freedoms and screwing with our economy, one
could assume AQ has been pretty damn successful at their objective to cause
the US to crumble.

The economic effects were unavoidable, sacraficing our constitutional rights
was and is optional. Hopefully, the country is starting to regain its
senses and realizing we needn't become a police state in reaction to being
attacked.

Whoever it is, that person has one really twisted perspective on life. Could
you imagine an existence where you lived to anonymously insult perfect
strangers? Would be pretty weird.

I can just visualize that person now. Sitting in the "privileged" ward of the
asylum, suggesting that others "get help". The person might not even be above
posting a bogus "for sale" ad for a boat, airplane, ski doo, pickup truck, or
whatever the discussion group was organized around- just so he or she could
make some specious claim to a fringe connection to the group. Such a person
might never make any comment related to the main topic of the group, but
repeatedly assure everybody that he or she reserved all expertise for the
"real" groups: those worthy of their magnificent presence.

Keep an eye out for such a person, Jim.

Terrorism is a worldwide problem. There have been any number of
"strikes" in the last two years that have been attributed to the same
folks who brought us 9/11.

It doesn't take much to wreak havoc on a U.S. facility. Two native-born
right-wing extemists took out a federal office building in Oklahoma City
and a hell of a lot of innocent people. You think a couple of crazed
right-wing extremist Muslims already in this country couldn't do the
same at any moment?

Where were you when it happened?

For me, I was on my way to physical therapy for my knee listening to the

radio in the
car....a date and time I will never forget.

Jim, I will gladly assume that your intentions were honorable in
posting this topic. Many of us were deeply affected by the 9/11
attacks. Many will never recover.

The rest of this thread is pathetic. "look at me, LOOK AT ME!!".
"I'm important, too!"

FWIW, I was sitting at my desk, working on the "current project", and
listening to the local Country station on the radio. When the DJ's
broke in with the news, I was stunned. My heart sank to my ass, and I
went to inform my crew of what happened, in disbelief.

Regards,
noah

Then again given the "Politics aside" nature of this post...why not make it
9-11-01 and OKC? Throw in a few more if you like. The level of the
spectacle and the gross death toll are of little relevance to someone who
lost a love one.

Jim

If I had said, "The Bush administration................." or
"Republicans......" or "Democrats......."
that would be political.

As someone said earlier, unfrickenbelievable.

Chuck,
You are so blinded by politics, you fail to see someone who was trying to
have a pleasant chit chat without any politics.

For what it is worth, you are wrong.

"Gould 0738" wrote in message

Yes, despite the attempts by Chuck to say otherwise, the purpose of my

post
was to
offer a small tribute to the victims of 9-11. That is why I prefaced the
title of the
post "politics aside". I did not want this thread to turn into another
political free
for all. Unfortunately some extremists in this group had a hard time

seeing
that and
had to interject what they thought my intentions were.

Sad.

"Seems to Me........" your intentions in this group are transparent.

"Seems to Me......." you have stated, just recently, that your only

motivation
for participating in the group is to yank people's chains.

"Seems to Me......." that if you didn't intend to start a flame war with

this
post, it would be the first such event, ever.

"Seems to Me........." that every thread you start is just more of the

same.

"Seems to Me........" that when you don't start a fight right away, you're
disappointed. For ten points and the bronze turd consolation prize, who
recently trolled a bait through the group and later followed up his own

post
with a comment like "Silence. It figures."?

"Seems to me......." you treat this newsgroup like an outhouse. You come

here
to dump crap, and nothing more.
When people have called you on it, you have stated that "we're not worthy"

and
that you save your immense boating expertise for the good groups that

really
count for something.

I suppose I could be wrong. It's just how it "seems to me."

Properly, a "mick" is a Roman Catholic. It is a derogatory term
Protestants used to describe those who belonged to the mother church,
and not necessarily Irish Roman Catholics.

Probably more from the Mc????? of our names. The Scots were Mac, and a big
% of the Irish were / are Mc?????.

Never heard that one. I and all the other Micks assumed is was from the Mc
that starts so many of the Irish clan names.

I always thought that was were the Mike came from, but I was just coping the
definition from the dictionary. I had never heard anyone call a Catholic a
Mike, but maybe in Harry's neighborhood they didn't have any Irish to make
fun of. ; )
