They just didn't like them. They liked minnows.
I can only recall one time a crappie was caught with a worm.
Wasn't me who caught it.
Part of it might have been how we fished too.
Since crappies liked minnows that's what we used when we were after
them, usually in deeper water.
This was in the Chain-O-Lakes.

We always used very small artificial baits when going after bluegills
and crappies. Whatever works...works.

Worm grunting is a big deal here and you have to stake a claim in the
Nat Forest. We even have a worm grunting festival in Sopchoppy, FL.
I just missed the worm grunting festival cuz my daughter was in town.

Once you get west of Tallahassee, well...you're on your way to Alabama,
and the "culture" reflects that.

People used to use one stave of a barrel, as the resonance was the best for
making the worms come to the surface. Not sure what the second piece of
wood was that caused the grunting sound by rubbing it on the stave.

Eh, I'm not a fisherman, but if I was I think I'd do what Vic does and
wait till it rains then pick 'em up off the sidewalk or something liek
that.

I do recall they sold hold cranked generators to bring worms up.
Stick a couple rods in the ground and crank away.
And "worm farms" too. The ads said you can make worm raising your
business. It was fun reading about it but my ma said I couldn't raise
worms in the house.
It was much easier to pick up a couple cartons of worms at the bait
shop. Had to go there to get minnows anyway.
Worms were cheap. Anyway I preferred redworms over crawlers.
Never saw them anywhere but the baitshop, but I didn't do much dirt
digging either.
We caught grasshoppers for bait in Missouri.
Catfish cave tickling sounds like more fun than worm grunting.

Had a neighbor 35 years ago who started a worm farm. Lots of worms, no
profit, at least for him. I could get enough worms for fishing from the
yard, but I just buy a container of red worms or crawlers, depending the
fishing and when done, pour the excess in the garden. Every once in a while
I find a huge night crawler when digging.
