The Hillary Secretary of State issue is sure getting interesting to watch
unfold. Looks like the Clintons outwitted Obama, and now he has *no* choice but to appoint her or risk a major backlash in his own party and supporters. Hope this isn't an indication of a President Obama's negotiating skills in other areas. Eisboch |

The Clintons have gone out of their way to make the appointment public and appear to be all but certain..... without actually waiting for Obama's team to formally make a decision or announcment. Big Bill has already agreed to cooperate fully in the vetting process, and Hillary's staff has routinely leaked that the process is well underway. If he choses Richardson or someone else instead, the Hillary followers are going to scream bloody murder. Dissed twice. They have him boxed in pretty nicely. Eisboch |

Who do we want for Secretary of Interior, get a name out fast. Whomever you name will not deny it and The Obama will have a hard time saying that he didn't intend to appoint that person. The Internet moves too fast these days. |

Obama could counter with the position that he withdraws her from consideration due to the Clinton's propensity to be manipulative and not be trusted by anyone , even the president of these United States Of America. Eisboch The FBI vetting process for high level appointees involves interviews with people who know the prospective appointee. There's no requirement the interviewee keep his or her mouth shut in the FBI interview. One of my old buddies was "vetted" by the FBI in the 1980s for the number 2 job at the USPS. I was interviewed about him. I wasn't asked to not mention the interviews. Perhaps the process is a bit different now, but neither the government nor the FBI can compel secrecy on a vetting matter. |

What changed their minds? The fact that 90% of the American public is ****ed off at being sold a bill of goods about the true nature of the auto bailout. I said it then when it was first proposed and I'll say it now - the average taxpaying schmuck who pays $30/40 co-pay everytime they go to the doc and carries 20% co-pay on major medical is not going to stand for supporting zero co-pays for UAW retirees and the feather bedding "job security" for unproductive workers. You want to hear an ear full about GM and the UAW, stop by your local post office and open a conversation about it with people. You'll be lucky to get out with having hearing damage. Pelosi and Reid saw the way the wind was blowing and, with the true conviction of the weak willed, changed tack. Notice that Barry O hasn't chimed in on this in any significant way? |

The state of the economy will be the only measuring stick for Obama's successes or failures. Everything else has become secondary. I wish him luck. I sure wouldn't want the job. Eisboch My "reform" agenda includes very few items that will cost serious money. They just won't be high on the priority list. That's right...there will be no White House support for efforts to restrict abortion. There will be no White House support for curtailing stem cell research. There will be no White House support for efforts to deny science. GITMO will be closed. The NLRB will represent workers and management, not just management. We will have an actual plan and actual schedule for getting out of Iraq. Many of the most restrictive and onerous provisions of the unPatriot Act will be flushed. Et cetera. You call that a social agenda. Those issues are irrelevant to 90% of Americans right now. They want to know whether they are going to have a job next year. The could care less about stem cell research, abortions and denying science, whatever that means. |

Why should the government pay for stem cell reseach? Most of the what the government pays for goes 90% of the way and then private money take it the next 10% and to the patent stage and big payoffs. They can use stem cells now, just not Federal Money. |

I am very familiar with FBI background checks. Virtually anybody, civilian or military who's job requires a security clearance has one performed on them. They are very routine in nature for basic (confidential and secret) clearances. In the old days the FBI or an authorized representative visited your neighborhood, interviewing friends, neighbors, work associates, etc. I don't think that happens so much anymore. I know from personal experience that now-a-days the check is more reliant on data bases of information, credit checks, passport information for foreign travel etc, and personal interviews are not routinely conducted unless something pops up in the data base. Background checks for high level clearances (top secret, etc.) are done quietly and without notice to the public because the fact that the person being "checked" may end up with that level of a clearance or above can be a breach of security in of itself, if made public. I don't believe the "vetting" process for Presidential appointees to high level cabinet positions is exactly the same that your buddy, the postmaster assistant, experienced. The vetting going on here is more associated with assuring the Obama staff that appointees will not cause a embarrassing situation or be controversial due to past associations or practices. Eisboch |

We still get badged federal investigators, carrying side-arms, visiting us in our homes interviewing us about our neighbors and friends for security clearences. There is quite a bit of government work in my geographic area and in my general field. Anyone holding a CS degree and a TS with a full scope poly can get if they are still breathing with minutes. |
