Have a pair of Motorolas with Jabra headsets and VOX. In practice I find the
VOX setting flaky at best, things like wind noise etc. interferes badly and
you need to be very disciplined not to start talking until the other person
has finished speaking for a second or two. The headset has a neat little
push to talk button that works well though, and allows the unit to stay
covererd/protected etc.

they transmit.

Totally hands free.

Also works great for dock communications when someone is going up to the
store or car to get the stuff. You know, they're almost to the car when
you remembered you forgot to tell them to bring the drill bits with that
drill motor? Yeah, that time...(c;

The best FRS radios I ever found was a Standard HX625A "Sport Talk"
that's now discontinued but still show up on the net. The difference
with these over the generic FRS radios is they are water
resistant...sealed antennas, controls, o-ring battery compartment seal,
rubber boots on all the connections and a first-class, sealed
mic/earphone connection for that handsfree headset Standard made for
them. They run on 3 AA cells for a long time. All 14 channels and all
the privacy tone pairs on an LCD display with rubber, sealed, buttons
just like the marine walkie talkies. If you ever see any in good
condition, snatch them up....I do.
