VHF/DSC NMEA Out Position Report
 

The 2005 West Marine Catalog have some new models of VHF/DSC radios
called ITU Class-D wich have NMEA Output, alowing the user to plot on
a PC or Gps/Ploter the position of other boats received by the DSC
radio.

In the other side, Garmin introduced in software version 3.1 for
GpsMap276C, the DSC function wich alows it to receive the others boats
position and plot their position on the display screen, navigate to
one position (GoTo) and including several functions to manage this
information. I have tried this only in the simulation mode.

I am interested in the compatibility of the ICOM IC M-602 new VHF/DSC
ITU Class-D and my Garmin GpsMap276C, and want know:

a) Anibody here has tested this connection? It Works? Any Problems?
b) What are the NMEA messages really sent by this radio?
c) What are the NMEA messages that this Gps really can receive and
process?
d) Experiences with another brands or models of VHF/DSC radio
suporting position report?
e) Experiences with another brands or models of GPS/Ploter on position
report?
f) Anny comments and sugestion on this topic will be apreciated

YOu can find all the DCS Spec's at the RTCM/ITU site. The NEMA
stuff should be available from the OEM's sites.

I have read several entries in the web about Gmdss and AIS, the manual
fo my Gpsmap276C and the specs of some new VHF radios, but I have yet
some questions about this subject:

1- The Garmin Map276C manual talks about DSC radio, but nothing about
what NMEA 183 messages it showld receive to plot the position of the
others boats.
2- Garmin "DSC position report" function is GMDSS/AIS
equivalent/compatible?
3- The specs of the ICOM ICM602 and others DSC radios says it uses
chanel 70 and send/receives (?) NMEA but do not specify what NMEA
messages are recieved or sent. Is this radio AIS ready/compatible?
4- I had searched the webb for NMEA messages DSC and DSCE but not
found any info about the format of these messages. Can anybody tell me
where I could find the format and content of these messages?
5- I read in some papers from IMO that the comercial AIS equipment
uses others chanels (82C for example) and want to know if the amateurs
VHS/DSC radios uses these channles, or only the chanel 70? That is:
could an ICOM VHF/DSC ICM602 receive information about posistion of
comerciaal ships equiped with comercial IMO/GMDSS grade AIS
equipments?
6- I know that the MaxSea PC software suports AIS; what are other
amateurs ECS/ECDIS PC software wich suports AIS?
7- What about others gps/ploters (recreational only) wich have suport
for AIS? Anybody could tell me brand and models?

My focus is on the use of AIS in a sailboat to help/improve colision
avoydance.

I have a Garmin 276C and an ICOM 402 and it does NOT work.

In SIMULATION the 276 can show you the position of DSC postion requests
and make a waypoit there. Same goes for MAYDAYs it will also show you
the MMSI number of the caller..

In practise it will not work with the 402... I am somewhat doubtful it
will work with the 602...

The reason seems to be that garmin correctly implements NMEA and the
others dont or the other way around ... anyways ...it does NOT work

The Icom M402 can't do it because it doesn't output NMEA, just inputs it.
It has no NMEA OUT wires. Neither does the M502.

The M602 DOES have NMEA OUT wires, and will probably work.

I have a Garmin 276C and an ICOM 402 and it does NOT work.

2) No, DSC position report is not AIS equivalent, as it is only transfered on request.

3) DSC-radios are generally not AIS compatible. In the early stages of development of AIS it was thought possible to transfer data via DSC channel 70. But this idea was soon be dumped due to channel overload, albeit the NMEA sentences DSC, DSE, DSR and DSI were already developed. Now these DSC and DSE sentences are used by some manufacturers for DSC output on chartplotters.
