Default radio weather cover

i'd like to put a vhf radio in my boat ,

can I use a cover like this

http://www.thechandleryonline.com//p...d=223%5FA21277

in the side panel above the normal radio?
will this fit a vhf like a icom 402 ?

what mods do I need to make to my boat ?

many thanks

I think that you will find most VHF sets are pretty waterproof already.

Probably not - but Icom marine radios are waterproof by themselves, so
don't need any additional protection. (At boat shows, Icom displays
_working_ radios in a bucket of water, and according to the local rep,
has used the same radios for a couple of years - other makers have
tried this, but no longer do it...)

Let's make that "Icom VHF Radios". One of these days I'm gonna catch Icom
at a boat show with that thing setup. I'm gonna grab the damned M802
"marine radio" off their shelf and put IT in the bucket and see how it
runs.....with the chinzy-assed connectors to the AT140 tuner, too!

What WERE they thinking?!

my new Standard Horizon Spectrum came as a water proof unit and in addition,
has a snap-on protective cover to protect the face and controls from
physical damage. Very nice unit and with the $40 rebate was a good price
as well.

That is a good deal, and a cover on sensitive equipment is always a good
idea, no matter what claims of water resistance or waterproofing the
manufacturer claims. Even if that condition could be expected to last a few
years, the sun and atmosphere would have severely damaged the appearance and
possibly functionality of the controls.

agreed, the UV will degrade the display and the controls..

If these units are flushmounted there would be little or nothing explosed to
the sun when not in use.

I didn't install mine in the cockpit but just inside the companionway
hatch.. This gives me ready access yet secure from theft or damage. I'm
always concerned about damage from spray and the claim of waterproof
satisfies these concerns.
