Satellite Weather
I would like to hear from anyone who regularly uses JVComm32 for receiving
weather data via radio. I understand that you can use the software with marine SSB as well as satellite at both VHF(137MH) and 1.7GH. What experience? Is it worth a buy at approximately $75 (60 Euros)? Any other S/W that can do this job? Any enlightenment will be appreciated. I've been using Ocens SeaStation 2000 for several years. Excellent!

I used JVComm32 for the last 45 days on a 1200 nmi trip up and down Baja and
mainland Mexico. I was very happy with its performance using it to receive HF Weather Fax data from Pt Reyes, CA. It just worked well, that's all I can say. I was plugged into the aux speaker output of an Icom 710 and feeding into the sound card line input of a (relatively) old Thinkpad 600. That information, together with Amigo Net input, enabled me to have a really good insight of the weather along our route, as well as some prognosis for weather further up/down the route. That's my $0.02 worth. Max Lynn "Vic Fraenckel" wrote in message ... I would like to hear from anyone who regularly uses JVComm32 for receiving weather data via radio. maxlynn, You're very right in saying that JVComm works great for HF
WeFax images, but I believe the question in this thread is about receiving realtime satellite weather images. Some additional equipment is needed to do this, and a satellite prediction program to anticipate the overflight of the satellite. These images are in realtime, not downloaded by a shore station and rebroadcast over HF as WeFax images are. The JVComm can also be used for this as well as many other programs. That is what I was thinking. When he says 137 MHz, that is direct low
orbit NOAA satellite image frequencies and takes an entirely different set of equipment and software. Not entirely true. The radio is different due to the frequency, but the
demodulator is the same. My SeaSeation uses the same demodulator for both FAX and SAT. Although the latest upgrade allows FAX to com in through the sound port (mic or line). The card is still necessary for SAT capture, but this is a marketing thing. Doug s/v Callista "Glenn Ashmore" wrote in message news:Y5L9c.2068$9g.160@lakeread04... That is what I was thinking.
