Make sure the device sending serial data has the SAME speed (baud
rate), number of bits/byte (7 or 8) and stop bit (yes/no) as the computer is looking for. Transmitting at 4800 baud while listening at 2400 baud, for instance, gives the experience you're observing. It's in the MANUAL for the instruments and the software.....
