What did you do today?
Another wonderful day in Seattle. Got up at 0420 fiddled around and got 2 shots espresso topped off with soy. Walked on the tracks by the boat yard in Ballard. The city is quiet at 0500. For the Deadliest Catch fans I walked over to the North Western it just happen to have the Wizard tied up a slip down and the North American across the cut. After bull****in with the guys on the dock went over to the south end of Lake Union and sailed a classic beetle cat at the Wooden Boat Museum and took a tour of the tug Author Foss. Built in 1989 damn nice motor room. Then off to a nautical book store on 15th and bought a nice little read titled “Primer of Towing”, by GH Reid. After a couple chapters decided to sip 2 bottles of Backs beer then took a swim in Puget Sound…. Burr! **** it felt good!! I think ill go visit the IBU Hall on Nickerson Monday. Tuggin should be fun. Rub a dub dub :) The Deadliest Catch boat tour is in Ballard noon -1700 2maro. the radio says captain somebody and his two boys will be there…. Humm, ill pass. One of the instructors at Seattle Maritime Academy told me to stop in at a bar tonight. Hes the bartender….. Said hed hook me up with some easily impressed 20s girls. Video at 0800. Damn life is good…………….. What the **** did you do today? Bob |

What the **** did you do today? Sat around moaning and holding my head in my hands from the third emergency root canal I had Friday. Went from feeling fine to having a lump under my jaw the size of a walnut in two days. Dentist thinks a few more teeth will go in short order. Dental hygine is great but I'm proving that clenching teeth was a poor coping mechanizm for marraige. All the gritting during my herniated disk episode last winter probably put several of them over the edge. The upside is that I'm greatly minimizing the probability of this happening on a long cruise. Since these can be life treatening events that could require medical evacuation, the 2-3 grand for each one is probably money well spent in the long run. Bob may have had an infinitely pleasanter day but I'm getting my mouth more reliable for long periods away from civilization. I'm starting to understand why one circumnavigator had all his teeth pulled before his trip. Anyone remember who that was? -- Roger Long |

We did well and did it double handed, so I'm pleased. We proved once again that sorting out spinnaker lines in the dark is confusing. Then I checked in with the online reporting of the LO300 http://trackinfo.fistracking.com/2008solmarlo300/ We decided to skip it this year, but I would still like to be out there. It is interesting to look at the tracking and speculate on who is doing what and why. It is probably way less interesting if you don't know the boats... After sleeping I got all hot and sweaty sticking my head into tight places to apply power to the new pressure water pump, and then to rebuild the toilet pump in the head. I did it in that order to have running water in the head sink when I was done. Then I walked down the pier and went for a swim. At least the last paragraph is on topic for r.b.c ;-) Ryk |

Took 4 years of pick and shovel. Now it is being converted into a yacht marina. Riggers were putting together a huge carbon fibre mast with carbon fibre rigging. I didn't know that they used it for rigging as well. Said that the mast was imported from good old New Zealand as they were better than those in Oz. The mast alone was AUD$750,000 - a bit out of my league. Rather beautiful place. Point of land was planned to be converted to high cost housing with magnificent views of the harbour but public protest prevailed. It is right opposite Cockatoo Island, an old ship building island with more dry docks. Now a reserve on which you can camp and explore right in the centre of the city. A bit like Alcatraz I suppose, but closer and not as bitterly cold with fog and biting breezes. Sunday we rode our bikes around the acres of the old military armoury depot alongside Paramatta River. Very interesting, right next door to the huge Olympic Park where the Games were held in 2000. Has a miniature railway previously used for munitions conveyance and now for transporting people about. Noticed that most of the quite nice apartments in the Olympic village had not been sold. So much for the planners's version of recouping costs. Met a family of house truckers who parked each night during their stay in the city by the roadside in the Olympic Park without being molested by passing Police. Good to know that it can still be done in a city as big and as regulated as this. Not much hope for boats though. You can still only legally stay aboard for two nights per month. Peter |

Made a cup of "Chinese coffee" and sat in the cockpit drinking it and watching it rain - Heavy Monsoon Rain! Had another cup. Now wired on caffeine decided to drive to town for provisions. Got my "going to town shorts and tee shirt" on, took the big umbrella out and hoofed it up to the parking lot. The truck won't start. Sat in the truck and watched it rain. Walked back to the boat and watched it rain. The rain abated somewhat so decided to try the truck again. Still won't start. Rain increases. Walked back to the boat. Also, we do not normally take out boats out of the water for winter storage as we can sail in the Antipodes in the winter as well as the summer. The water does not freeze. The vast majority of boatowners here, take their boats out of water in the winter. Our sailingseason is from April 1 till November 15. Damn life is good…………….. What the **** did you do today? Friday, left work early. Put the newly-painted rudder on (transom mount), sailed about 15 miles in 10-15 knots to usually-busy Swan Creek. Saturday, watched the sparse boat scenery, napped, made lunch, napped, enjoyed more scenery and wildlife. Sunday, watched everybody leave, enjoyed the scenery left, some kids playing in the water, then hauled, recalibrated the knotmeter, sailed downwind home. Too hot, so decided to stick around overnight. Emailed the wife (who'd had a fun day running an interesting meeting), woke up about dawn for a leisurely drive home and to work. Boring (and hot) as hell. Loved it.
