color-coded deck caps?

You people are all nuts. You label the opening, not the cap. Caps can
migrate. One more thing to go wrong.

Very unlikely to migrate I would say:-.
Would anyone have either the water or the 'waste' caps off while the fuel
cap was off.?
Would anyone have either the fuel or the waste caps off while taking on
water?
Would anyone have any other cap off while the waste connection is in use?

Seems like this would be
a stick-on or paint solution.

Either that or spend a small fortune replacing your fittings with the kind
that have built-in labels, like this:

I'd like to use them instead of the ones I have now.... blue for
water, red
for fuel, black for sewage.

I don't want to replace the entire plate... just the caps.

My question is *WHY*?

No one puts or sucks anything into/from our boat but under my direct
supervision. I know exactly what caps hide what, and the plates are
marked indelibly for any who can read English.

Stainless caps last pretty much forever. Plastic, in a word, doesn't. (I
had to cut out an old one far younger than our fuel and water plates.)

My neighbor, the fuel polisher, had to remove water from the same
fuel tank twice in three weeks. Same owner mistakenly put water in twice.

No, I don't think his name was WILBURRR!

Having two adjacent caps off at the same time is an invitation to
disaster, a big no no on my boat.

Removing the wrong cap is where the mischief occurs. Don't ask me how
I know that but there is a reason why everything is now color coded.

Regularly can have all three open at the same time. Waste is port at
the shrouds, fuel port stern, water starboard stern. No mixing them up
even if the last two weren't secured.
