Hi,
I am planning a trip from Annapolis to Jacksonville, Fl. Having not done this trip in the past, I was wondering about the pros and cons of going outside from Norfolk to Jacksonville versus going down the ICW thru Albermarle and Pamilco to Beaufort, NC and then out to Jacksonville. Has anyone made this trip and would be willing to have an internet chat offline? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks Dennis |

Has it ever occurred to you that if somebody has to ask for that kind of help on a newsgroup and actually sets any store in what the likes of a Skippy has to offer then he definitely is not ready or competent enough for such a trip? Has nobody here learned a single thing from the wreck of the "Red Cloud?" I'm trying to ease the burden on the rescue services here. Wilbur Hubbard |

We've never gone outside at Norfolk because of Hatteras, nor have we gone outside from Jacksonville. On the last trip back north, we went from the St. Mary's River (Fernandina) to Charleston SC, and then from Charleston SC to the Cape Fear River. We should have gone from Masonboro to Beaufort NC but we didn't and we ran aground opposite Masonboro inlet. We go in to Charleston as we have family there, and also because I don't want to do more than 24 hours at a shot. |

Conventional wisdom says that it is better to go inside from Norfolk to Beaufort, NC. The weather off of Hatteras has a reputation for being rough and unpredictable. There is nowhere to hide out there. In addition you've got shoal water and gulf stream effects to deal with. Have you ever been offshore before or run long legs requiring over night passages and watch standing? If not, I'd recommend that you stick to short hops that you can cover in one day until you learn more about the issues. |
