Doug,
Have gone thru most of your list and the Macgregor's layout is by far the
most open I've seen in anything in that size range. I also like the weight
and draft.
Any idea how it sails?

My wife and I daysailed, weekended, and cruised, in a trailerable for
over ten years. Often we went in company with fellow club members or
friends with trailerable sailboats, so we got to see a lot in action.
The boat that we chose was quite a bit smaller (19')for reasons of
practicality.

In the size range you're looking at, the most bang for the buck will be
one of these:

MacGregor 26 MacGregor LOA=25.8 LWL=23.8 Bm=7.9 Dr=1.2/5.3 MONO-WB
Sloop-Fr Disp=2,850 Ballast=1,225 SA=236

They were built from about 1987 to 1995, and their biggest flaw is that
they are bulky on land and tippy in the water. But they are relatively
fast & roomy boats. Of course nobody at the yacht club will be impressed.

If i have one suggestion, that is to keep the weight down. Lots of
people are tearing up their cars and especially their trannies & brakes
trying to tow boats that are 102% of their vehicles tow capacity. You're
far better off at about 75% or less. Remember too that trailer
maintenance is one of the trade-offs of not having to pay for a slip...

They're tender, but they're pretty fast. The older Mac 25 swing keel (as opposed

keel, or one of the small sportsboats (much commoner in Australia than over here
though) designed by Farr or Jutson. Check out the B-25, Elliott 770, Kirby 24
(another rare bird), Tripp 26, one of the S2 trailerables, or the real cream of
the crop, the Great Harbor 26

It is a lovely boat. It was our first boat, with one-cylinder Yanmar diesel
and iron swing keel. Originally sold with a trailer. That center cockpit
design made for marvelous privacy if you were only a couple or had other
people or chuildren on board for a few days. We sold ours to a man in
Washington state who had a trailer special built and dragged it all the way
from Washinton to New York in February. Then he dragged her to the Gulf to
sail, for awhile then back to Washington where the boat is now. We have lost
touch with the buyer. There also used to be a web site devoted to the boat
but it has gone belly up, I think. The boat came as both a sloop and a
ketch.

As Dawsons, the boats were built in Las Vegas, Nevada. Parker bought the
molds and produced Parker-Dawsons in Florida and then in Nausset, Mass. They
got too costly and he sold out to Nausett Marine, which built a very few as
the Nausset 26. I saw a new one -- the last one, I guess -- for sail at
Nausset some years ago.

Our present boat looks like the Dawson's mother. It's an O'Day 37 CC sloop.
