Yacht totally destroyed

A 17 m yacht "Melanie" was recently destroyed in a sudden and
violent storm, please go to http://www.lostyacht.org for pictures
and more information. (this is a donation site)

Hey, I lost 20K on a house once, please send me some cash.

Certainly a novel alternative to insurance. Perhaps we should all try it.

An interesting concept perhaps, an insurance co-op. Members get billed
not a set annual bill, but a small overhead plus their share of the
losses that occurred over the past pick a time period with the
verifiable list of those losses posted somewhere.

That's sort of how Lloyds of London works as I understand it, except
that members share in the premium revenue as well. An insurance co-op
would have to be managed as a business of course, or it would quickly
fail. One major problem is that the co-op would likely pick up the
riskiest business out there unless members were thoroughly screened
and vetted. There are reasons why large companies will not ensure
ferro cement construction. A provision for loss reserves would also
need to be established so that members could not pick and choose the
losses they would cover. To be successful the co-op would end up
looking a lot like an insurance company with all that implies.

First reaction was: donation, they must be kidding.. But then I read the
comments to that post... and as I disagreed with the tone (though not
the content) of quite a few, I decided to donate.

Disparaging comments on french socialism (or worse) are welcome ;-)

I figure the insurance companies have every base covered.

I'm just wondering how, with all the trauma of finding her home smashed
to pieces, Julie still managed to find the wherewithal to have herself
photographed holding said pieces. That doesn't make any sense to me.

Ruby (and neither does the part where they ask for donations!)

Perhaps for the sympathy wallet.

It wasn't their home, they have an apartment or other dwelling.

They bought an uninsurable boat.

Do you have boat insurance? Why?

Would you buy an uninsurable house in a flood area? All boats
is live in a "flood" area.

They screwed up,but are far from indigent.

Of course I feel for them and the loss of their boat, but there are many
better causes to give my $$ to.

Has anyone considered this entire affair may be a SCAM? It would be
easy to throw up a page with a PayPal donation button.
Hmmmm......please visit my webpage, www.blueseas.com, and send me a
few bucks for my little orphan puppy who has a special needs diet. $5
or $10 per month will help...........
