Storage recommendation(s) in FL/GA solicited
Hi, Y'all... We're about to leave the boat for 3-4 months (mid-March to mid-June/ early July) to attend to family business. When we return, we're heading to Maine on the Gulf Stream and other northerly pointings, from somewhere either in FL or GA. At the moment we're in the Miami area. Our preference would be for ground, secure, storage, but we'd consider in-the-water alongside/out back/in someone's home or condo slip if recommended or owned by one of this group/list. We have some challenges, in that we're slightly over 6' deep and over 63' tall, so access to some areas (e.g. Indiantown, otherwise attractive) won't happen. We could go on the ground in St. Petersburg (which we know from our 3 year refit and later 4 month rehab - it has some advantages because of our familiarity) for about $300 a month plus hauling. If we were to stay in the water at someone's house or condo's slip (right out back, not remote) where an eye could be cast upon us on a regular basis (visual, from home, not maintenance trips), we'd expect some fraction of that cost. Any place on or near the coast of FL from St. Pete around to, and, GA, would do. Any personally known (that is, you know personally, rather than speculation) suggestions as to who I might contact to accomplish that? Any "insider" info about any given marina/boatyard which might lend an advantage? We'll be making the decision in the next week or so, as we'll have to be sailing if it isn't right in this neighborhood, and we don't want schedulitis! Thanks, as always. Skip,, I will look for the info,, can't seem to find it just now.
I friend told me he left his boat on the St John river, St Augustine, Fla. He said it was a good spot to leave, on the hard. Not too expensive and all. I have his email here somewhere.. There is a lot of dockage available in Lauderdale at private homes. I'd start by checking the local classifieds and Craig's list. There are also some backwater marinas in Lauderdale that may offer halfway reasonable rates but some are west of the 55 ft bridge on the New River. If unstepping the mast is a possibility, many other options become available east of Lake Okeechobee in the Port St Lucie area. |

Lauderdale behind homes, but you can't stay aboard. You might be able to squeek out a day or two, but it's become very difficult to find anywhere to dock a boat and stay on it, even for a few days while you get it ready to leave. -- Geoff www.GeoffSchultz.org |

Skip,
You might want to check out Two Way Fish Camp on the Little Altamaha just east of the US17 bridge. 4 miles off the ICW, South of Darien, 8' at the dock, new travelift, dry storage yard and they gave me some good prices for yard space and travelift time commissioning Rutu. Also a lot shorter drive from Atlanta than J'ville. A little primitive but better than the name infers and Mud Cat Charlie's is a pretty decent restaurant. It has gotten a lot more popular with the DIY crowd now that Tidewater has sold out to Hinckley. -- Glenn Ashmore I'm building a 45' cutter in strip/composite. Unless they moved it, the St. John's River isn't anywhere near St. Augustine. I seem to recall the St. Sebastian River running behind St. Augustine, and there was some talk about locating Jacksonville on the St. John's at one time. -- Good luck and good sailing. s/v Kerry Deare of Barnegat http://home.comcast.net/~kerrydeare |
