Storage recommendation(s) in FL/GA solicited
Thanks to all who responded on and off list. We checked
extensively on the east coast of FL, and a few on the west coast (where it was presumed to be cheaper, but the offset was that it was several hundred miles and many days round trip to get back to where we started from in Miami). Because of the incremental cost to go to the west coast, other than a few direct recommendations, plus the place we'd done our refit and later wreck rehab, we didn't follow up on most of those. However, I've left the yards and numbers for those who may find them useful. We have some issues which others might not, so we've noted that if they apply: First, we're deep and tall, 6.5 and 64, respectively. That limited us on some of our possibilities. Indiantown Marina, a very frequent referral, was knocked out from that difficulty. Second, we have overhangs which extend our Coast Guard LOA from 45 to the maker's 46.5 and if you count the davits and dink, well over 50 feet. Depending on how the yard calculates length, that could be a significant cost difference. Finally, we're self-insured, and as yet have not found an affordable liability-only policy, so we're going bare, there, too. Some yards require a separate rider issued by the insurance company listing them as a named insured, and others will just require us to display the affidavits page. As we have neither, those requiring same were not possible. We found that yards have several ways of doing things. Some (very few) have a flat rate haul/launch/pressure wash, and others have separate charges per foot for each of those and still others have per-foot charges but inclusive of all three. As we have a clean bottom, and I'll dive it before we actually leave Miami, we won't require pressure washing. The ability to separate those charges was useful to us. Some places have a one-time charge separately for blocking, either by a per-foot charge or a labor rate. Indiantown Marina requires you to buy their tie-down straps (presuming you can reuse them on future occasions if you're a repeat customer), and rent (a substantial number of) jackstands. Our choice uses cradles which they rent, but placement is included in the haul/launch fee. A few yards have flat rate storage, while others have a minimum rate which could be more for larger boats, but most have straight per-foot (however, see above about length calculation) charges with some having add-ons like seasonal tie-downs or ours, with a cradle rental, as additional monthly costs. A couple, primarily work yards, have an escalating sliding scale of charges as months go on, to encourage you to leave rather than take up valuable space. Finally, one yard recommended renting dehumidifiers, as well as shrinkwrapping (due to trees), in the summer, for a a $35 monthly fee. Shrinkwrapping would add substantially to any short-term storage, and as many have discovered to their horror, may have negative implications for the finish on a boat if left for some time The winner: Tiger Point Marina Fernandina Beach referred by st. mary's 904-277-2720 10 RT haul 3PW optional, 1.25/day in water, 40 feet=100 flat/mo cradle rental, 5.75/mo with CG LOA *not overhangs* (=7.85/foot/mo total) 2.50/ft move storage-work yard + 25/day work yard (no length relationship) The others: Salt Creek Marina - Jim's checking about a deal... 727-895-4481 13.50 haul/launch/pw, 10/mo but I can work on the boat otherwise others pay 25/day work yard lay days Snead Island Boat Works 941-722-2400 5 each haul/launch, $50/hour min 2ppl block (est 150), 6.50, full liability (maybe ok but no insurance, all the way on west coast) Cuts Edge Harbor Marina (941) 729-4878 ??? search internet Viking Boat Works (Tampa) 727-576-1094 NOA Marine 727-576-9315 13/ft at Brian's in Palmetto Bradenton Beach Marina 941-778-2288 No dry Rivertown Boatworks and Marina 941-761-2662 (didn't call - see explanation west coast) SCBW 727-821-5482 Sailor's Wharf 727-823-1155 Embree 727-896-0671 Interbay Moorings (tampa) 813-677-2739 Shell Point Marina 813-645-1313 Westland Marine 419 N Washington Ave Titusville, FL 32796 (321) 267-1667 $395RT hoist 90PW, 2/foot block, 10.50/mo Titusville Municipal Marina, 451 Marina Road, Titusville: 321-383-5600 Water only no dry storage Brunswick Marina "electric hoist" Hwy 17 Brunswick, GA (Phone) (912) 265-2290 Answering machine - didn't sound like a marina Credle's Complete Marine 1455 Hwy 17 South Brunswick, GA 31520 (Phone) (912) 261-1935 Taking no new boats Hampton River Club Marina 1000 Hampton River Club Drive St. Simons Island, GA 31522 (Phone) (912) 638-1210 No - referred to Dunbar Sales Dunbar Sales 912-265-8573 No dry storage Troupe Creek Marina 375 Yacht Road Brunswick, GA 31520 (Phone) (912) 264-3862 NLIS Fort McAlister Marina and Inn (ossabaw) 912-727-2632 No lift thunderbolt marine 3124 River Drive Thunderbolt, GA 31404 912 356-3875 8+4mandatory PW (12) haul/launch, 10/mo Brunswick Landing Marina 2429 Newcastle Street Brunswick, GA 31520 (Phone) (912) 262-9264 10/mo, 10 haul-launch/pw 125 flat optional 125 block flat (required) provisioning in water same but pay for electric Jax Marina (st. marys entrance) AKA Mayport Marina 904-246-8929 No - Self Service Amelia Island Yacht Basin 904-277-4615 7.50 haul and block - but no storage, work yard only Clapboard Creek Marina 904-757-1135 NO Arlington Marina 904-743-2628 ANS - no return call Sader Point Marina (ortega river) 904-384-1383 NO Huckins Yacht 904-389-1125 NO Whitney's marine power and sail (orange Park) 904-269-0027 No Dry Gibson Dry Docks 386-325-5502 Too Shallow Acosta Creek Harbor 386-467-2229 Short Bridge The Boat Show Marina 386-736-6601 ?? Rosalie B. wrote: Rosalie, thanks so much for reposting 478 lines of Skip's post. Cheers Marty I didn't intend to - I thought I canceled before it was posted -- sorry. What I had been going to say is that a) I hadn't realized that he definitely wanted out of the water storage, and b) I didn't think he had listed both Harbortown Marinas - when I was trying to erase all but the relevant lines, I saw that he had in fact got both of them, and it was at the point that I canceled the post or at least I thought I did. I also wondered whether he had included the marina in St. Mary's GA |

Not too expensive and all. Unless they moved it, the St. John's River isn't anywhere near St. Augustine. I seem to recall the St. Sebastian River running behind St. Augustine, and there was some talk about locating Jacksonville on the St. John's at one time. The St. Johns is one of the (if not *the*) longest northn-flowing rivers in the country. It may well go to STA... Even so, it's not very long. And it doesn't get near St. Augustine. I made the trip up (i.e., "down") the St. John's once all the way to Sanford FL. There's a lake there and a small marina, but I will tell you that there aren't too many cruising sailboats. One reason is the 45' bridge at Green Cove Springs. Another is that this is bass fishing and 'gator country, and there's not much sailing along this route. There's a lot of nature and beautiful country along the route, but one particularly memorable incident was my discovery near Palatka of The Burger King Dock. That's right, the local fast food franchise has a rear dock on the river where you can tie and get fat. Quite interesting. -- Good luck and good sailing. s/v Kerry Deare of Barnegat http://home.comcast.net/~kerrydeare |
