Boat Brokers
I am sure there are non used car salesmen type boat brokers,
unfortunately, I have yet to meet one If your name suggests your location, I can recommend three or four just up the state from you, on both sides. If you're anywhere on the east coast up to Baltimore I can recommend others. If you're in either the US or BVI I can recommend still more. While I'm sure I could not claim to know it all, I *have* boarded more than 200 boats in the last year, all but a handful with a broker. I could not have bought my boat (well, technically, I haven't, yet, but, stay tuned) without a broker.... L8R Skip "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." - Mark Twain -- "And then again, when you sit at the helm of your little ship on a clear night, and gaze at the countless stars overhead, and realize that you are quite alone on a great, wide sea, it is apt to occur to you that in the general scheme of things you are merely an insignificant speck on the surface of the ocean; and are not nearly so important or as self-sufficient as you thought you were. Which is an exceedingly wholesome thought, and one that may effect a permanent change in your deportment that will be greatly appreciated by your friends."- James S. One fellow who sold me a used car way back when, later became a (locally) famous restaurant owner. Great guy, great food. Another long time friend sells boats (old and new) on the Chesapeake out of Rock Hall, and he's by far one of the most honest and straight-forward people one could hope to meet. But hey, wait a minute. Maybe you just have to look around a little. Isn't Florida the place that "elected" President Bush? -- Good luck and good sailing. s/v Kerry Deare of Barnegat http://kerrydeare.home.comcast.net/ |

Boat Brokers
Just as a generalization, IMHO, Broker = Working for the Seller or a
Dealership.. Seldom, if ever is he going to consider the buyers true needs or expectations unless it coincides with what the Seller is offering.. I guess broker with a consience would steer you away from anything that was beyond your need or where you might later have buyers regret. I've purchased two boats through brokers and sold one.. This is of ~ dozen boats I have owned. In, either case, I felt that I got screwed.. (long story).. I walk the docks and talk to sellers and other boater to find what I want not what the broker thinks he can sell me.. If it's broker listing then try to maintain control over the situation and let the broker be a gofer. Steve s/v Good Intentions |

Boat Brokers
I guess broker with a consience would steer you away from anything that was
beyond your need or where you might later have buyers regret. Heck yes. Sellers are a dime a dozen, genuine buyers are extremely rare. One sure way to sell a lot of boats is to build up an honorable relationship with the buyers. When a lot of boats are sold, a lot of sellers are happy. Remember that most brokers have access to hundreds and hundreds of boats. Yes, they are getting paid by the seller- but they are under no compulsion to represent one seller's offering to the exclusion of all others. The broker doesn't make a dime unless the buyer finds *something*, and a smart broker will help a buyer make a wise decision from a broad inventory rather than try to "stuff" the buyer into a wrong boat. I always chuckle when I hear the old chestnut, "Always deal with the private sellers, avoid brokers like the plague!" If there's anybody with a definite agenda to shoehorn a buyer into a single, specific, boat it's the private seller. He only has *one* boat for sale, not hundreds. Most private sellers, like most brokers, are generally honest- but a crooked private seller (and yes, Elizabeth, they do indeed exist) can get a way with a lot more on a single isolated transaction that a crooked broker could ever hope to pull off as a regular course of business. Most states have some sort of consumer protection laws in place that would eventually shut down the crooked broker- but nobody bothers to go after the crooked private seller because the crime is an "isolated incident." |

I am sure there are non used car salesmen type boat brokers, unfortunatly, I
have yet to meet one with that kind of attitude, you never will. All good salespeople are taught very early on in their careers to "qualify the prospect" (meaning, 1.) does he have the money, 2.) does he have the authority to make a purchase decision, and 3.) will he buy from that particular salesperson), and should he past that test, 4.) is he worth selling to?. Your bad attitude disqualifies you on #4 above, which means the good salespeople won't deal with you (you are far more effort to sell to, far more effort to keep after the sale, and do far too much bitching afterwards to be worth the commission), so only the most poor of used car type salespeople will deal with you. Meaning you get screwed a lot, and pay extra for poorer quality Which is what you want to happen. Because you like it, enjoy. |
