Default Source for quality 3/8" stainless 1x19 wire ?

I need to get about 400' of 304 stainless 3/8" 1x19 to rerig my boat.
Looking for some "industrial" price place rather than a "yacht" price
place. Have all StaLok's so don't need any services. Any
suggestions.

If looking for an industrial price rather than a yacht price, call some
industrial supply stores rather than chandlers....

This NG has become basically useless.

But seriously though....
How hard is it to pull out the yellow pages? I would first be calling
around before i ask other people to basically find out names of businesses
and prices for me. thats simple laziness. Its a different matter if
dealing with something that is quite specialised, but for simple things like
wire rope, you could find out more in 15 minutes of your own time on the
phone than you could by asking other people. Further to this, this is
actually a *cruising* NG, with people not only all over the country, but all
over the world. So be considerate and reasonable; call harbour freight for
a start, even west marine's prices are apparently not too bad... then break
out your local yellow pages and comparison shop. This is a *news* group,
not a walmart.

Best regards,
Shaun

Was that the sound of a punter stamping his little foot in
frustration, that I just heard?

If you want expensive rigging cheap, you'll probably have to do a
little work yourself. Sad but true.
Start at this pointer to industrial suppliers of cable, and work
through the dozens of outfits listed, til you hear a price quote you
like.
Got it?

Hello Shawn,

Thanks for your advice. We are in southern Mexico - just came back up
from Guatamala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama,
Ecuador, Galapagos and Peru. Is that international enough for you?
Where have you cruised lately?

There are no yellow pages here - except useless internet ****. We have
been cruising outside the USA for 17 years. So your advice is not
actually worth much to me or anybody who is cruising outside the US.

Five years ago this NG was inhabited by folks who knew something about
something - now it seems full of empty wanna-be whiners. I suggest you
drink less and cruise more. You could turn out to be a fine fellow -
at least you can spell.

BTW, I didn't ask anyone to "look it up" - I thought there might be
cruisers here who worked on the own boats.

Well, I reckon I do know where to get most things, at least the things
I need. Picked up enough 3/8" English made stainless 1 X 19 to re-rig
a 40' sloop in Singapore. I did the guy a favor and he gave me the
wire....

It sounds as though you are down in S. America, I'm in S.E. Asia. You
want me to recommend a shop that will sell you commercial quantities
of stainless cable in Jakarta, Singapore, Malaysia or Thailand then
let me know. I'll be glad to tell you, e-mail, fax, phone or street
address..

But if it were me I'd have a look around where I am to see what is
available there.

I've had decent luck with these guys even though they are "yachty" and
in the States so you'll need to deal with customs and such:

While it's true that this forum is a lot different than it was five or
ten years ago I don't see anyone forcing you to read it. If you think
it sucks move on off to http://www.cruisersforum.com or some such. I
still like it and I'm a fairly serious cruiser but as they say YMMV.

Hi 'a',
my advice is worth exactly what you paid for it ;-) Sounds like you should
be having the time of your life - did you not succeed in leaving the stress
behind when you cast off? You could have mentioned where you are located,
what i was implying in my post was that nobody knows where you are in the
world. Ive never actually been to the states myself, but even I've heard of
west marine ;-)

I cant help you out with where you are, but if you happen to be in australia
(where i come from) or new zealand, indonesia, south korea, japan or russia
then i might be able to help you out. I've only 5 years experience abroad
to date, and unfortunately it looks like i'll be tied to the land for the
next 2 or 3 years. I do have plenty of experience with trying to find
things in strange countries where there is little to no information, and i
can's speak the language. Since i most like being where the peopole aren't,
I've generally had to rely on a bit of dumb luck combined with some lateral
thinking and a liberal application of boot leather to get the things i want.
I've often been in that annoying situation (in asia) where every store has
only one brand of a particular item, and that is all you can get in that
country. People just cant understand why you'd want anything different ;-)

Good luck with your search, maybe someone will come forward now that you
have mentioned where you are. It does help a bit if you supply extra
information.... the first thing people think about when they read a post
like this is 'oh great, now i have to actually ask this guy where he is in
the world, what he needs it for, how much he needs etc etc...'. At this
point, many well intentioned people just move on to the next post.

Best Regards,
Shaun

Hey thanks - I've bought stuff from them before and they're good. I
was looking for 304 but I'll suffer with 316 at this low price if this
is from Korea or better.
