Struggling to Bermuda
 

Is anyone else following Donna Lange's struggle to reach Bermuda? This is
turning into real drama.

Whatever judgements you make about how she got into this mess, it's a good
thing for anyone who goes deepwater to be reminded what reserves of strength
and endurance we carry. All too many people give up too soon and sometimes
even die as a result.

If this were your typical yachtsman in his half million dollar Beneatau with
a full crew, he would probably already be back on shore with his feet up on
the desk asking his secretary to place a call to the insurance company.
You've got to admire her determination not to push the "Easy Button".

Roger ,, I have been watching this for days... she has really been up
against it. This morning she is about 100 kt miles from out.. or at least
that far from easy sailing.

She has been at the tiller for hours. Since she is going toward Bermuda and
the wind is south southwest she is on a broad reach.

This am she had the storm jib up .. and she is out in the cockpit for twelve
hours.

When/if she makes it to Bermuda her friends are flying her back to RI for
some R and R.

She may be nutty but she is tough.

Something I can't figure .. why did she get so far north with the big low
pressure system and all?

I checked the Bermuda weather for marine etc.. If she had stayed south, the
wind is strong, the waves are like 9'.

She could be cruising toward Charleston, SC and then Larry could be giving
her a rub down.

I have some friends on a 58' Amel Super Maramu that pulled into
Charelston two days ago to wait out the storm. They got caught in 20 ft
+ seas on the way down to the keys, then the islands. From what they
said, they got the last slip in town since so many were seeking
shelter.

I do not know why anyone thinks Donna is "nutty". I think she has
"True Grit".

Joe,, I never said the woman didn't have "true grit" ..

But,, she keeps putting herself in extreme danger, sailing when she
shouldn't.

And remember .. she is alone.


I truely think she has some issues. But that doesn't mean she isn't a good
sailor ..

I just hope she gets home ok,, and figures out why she keeps pushing the
envelope.

YOur friends didn't push the envelope and they are on a much bigger boat
with crew..

I don't really think she's pushing the envelope -- I think the weather is
doing that for her. If she had perfect weather every day, I don't think she
would be in the least bit disappointed.

She keeps going into bad weather. When the weather advisory is for
hurricane conditions to the right but moderate conditions to the left,,, do
ya go right?

The system she is in was forcast in advance. She could have gone to Bermuda
and avoided it. She didn't .. she kept heading for RI.
Now . .. she is in deep doo doo and heading for Bermuda ..

Maybe you are just trying to be a contrarian .. but your input is very dumb.

KLC,, do you know anything at all about Donna and her adventures? You don't
seem to.

She is barely surviving. Her boat and her body have taken a huge pounding.

The way I understand it ,, she could have gone to Bermuda but decided to
head on into a very bad situation
as she is heading toware RI.

Thank god I'm not there.. 50 kt wind, huge waves, by herself.

I think you have once again proved what a total asshole you are..


Please,, go do some work on your day sailor.

The storm was well forecasted almost a week in advance and she headed
right into the main path as you point out. Unfortunately she seems to
be excercising bad judgement, or failing to get and interpret the
right data.

I wish her well but nothing good will come of this in the end unless
she improves her planning skills. Bermuda is a *very* unforgiving
landfall unless you get it right.

Well seems she has a goal to accomplish. I don't know any sailor who
has been at sea for many years who did not find themselves in bad to
extreme weather every onece and awhile.


And remember .. she is alone.

I know that. Sometimes it's better to be alone, don't have to worry
about others screwing things up. I admire solo sailors, captains of
their own destiny.

I truely think she has some issues. But that doesn't mean she isn't a good
sailor ..

Everyone has issues. Maybe the best cure for thoses issues for her is
to focus on an extreme challenge.

I just hope she gets home ok,, and figures out why she keeps pushing the
envelope.

I'm confident she will make it home. Some clowns can go out in 3 ft
seas and it's "Pushing the Envelope" of thier skills. Some can sail in
hurricanes, take roll overs, spend countless hours on the helm, before
they feel they are pushing the envelope. Dreams can often become
challenging, but challenges are what we live for.

Well anyone willing to fork out over a million bucks for a french boat
most likely lives a pretty damn pampered life. They IMO rank with most
weekend warriors, seeking bimbos and gin, more than a true challenge
of their skills.
