Hi
I've just been mucking around on Google Earth up the top of the gulf there and I can see an island called Isla Montague. The area around it looks like some sort of primeval flood plain. I can't make sense of the landscape and coastline there and zooming in doesn't help a lot. Can anyone who's been up that way describe the area? I can see what looks to be a highway coming south but it may be the Arizona/California border?? Maybe. Anyways, I'm confused. If that area is as desolate as the aerial photos imply (to me), is the sailing done way down the other end? Informed opinions would be appreciated. thanks Hoges in WA |

Hi Can anyone who's been up that way describe the area? Hoges in WA I spent a few weeks up there day sailing. I started at Peurto Penasco. It was the first spot south of AZ and on the SOC. Huge wide bay (1.5 miles) that was about 12' deep. When the tide went out you needed binoculars to see the water. There was the rich gringo gavacho trailer parks then there was a hippy ex pat sort place too. And of course some guy named Rojo who had a few boats and ran a SSB station. All the local polica looked the other way in regards to Red and his "marina' opreation. But that was 1982 and my yacht was a 15' sprit rigged sailing dory. oh, and my aussi dog and a hot 21 year old 6' girlfriend. Did a lot of day sailing down the beach. ate rock oysters, speared fished, and copulated a plenty. Oh, local knowledge...... shallow, sand, dry and hot, little water, no wind and then too much for a sailing dory. If you dont have a flat bottom center board for get it. Bob |
