Default Top of Sea of Cortez

Hi

I've just been mucking around on Google Earth up the top of the gulf there
and I can see an island called Isla Montague.

The area around it looks like some sort of primeval flood plain. I can't
make sense of the landscape and coastline there and zooming in doesn't help
a lot.

Can anyone who's been up that way describe the area?

I can see what looks to be a highway coming south but it may be the
Arizona/California border?? Maybe.

Anyways, I'm confused. If that area is as desolate as the aerial photos
imply (to me), is the sailing done way down the other end?

Informed opinions would be appreciated.

thanks
