I been thinkin I am so glad I dont live in one o those silly yachty
places where ppl wear designer clothes and boat shoes. When I look
'round, Carabelle, Fl has character. The shrimp boat just down river
has a huge hole in the side patched with a sheet of 4'x8' plywood
screwed in place with drywall screws. It has a psuedo-Danforth anchor
made from plate steel welded to what looks to be truck axle and has 3
brake drums for weight and is covered with about 1/4" of rust. All
the trucks around here have Confederate flags in the windows. The old
guy fishing on the dock has no teeth. For culture, there is always
the magazine rack at the IGA store. None of the kids wear shoes and
ppl think a double wide is high class living. Around here a yacht is
an oyster boat and a six pack. Unfortunately, my piece of paradise is
being ruint by rich yankees from up north and escapees from the south
Florida hell. They close the beaches in front of their condos and
beach houses as if they really own it and expect my tax dollars to pay
for a new bridge to what is now THEIR island. Screw em, I am prayin
fer a good hurricane to clean this place out again so us locals can
have it again.

Last year we motored an Endeavour 35 sloop up the ICW from Daytona
Beach to Mayport where we put to sea for Charleston.

One of the great things to see on the ICW is that there are still lots
of Cracker familes, yards full of junk, old trucks that don't run, and
8 kids jumping off the dock into the water as Mom and Dad sit watching
them from their lawn chairs....RIGHT NEXT DOOR to the millionaire
Yankee's mansion with its Lawn-O-Green manicured lawn noone ever sits
on pouring out from its immaculate patio noone ever uses because the
patio furniture looks like noone ever sat in it. There's 4 old boat,
well used boats, tied up at the Cracker's house. They ENJOY their
waterway. The Yankees, on the other hand, don't even have a dock,
much less a boat. If they have a dock, it's one of what I call the
"Property Enhancement Docks" used to boost up the reselling price of
it all at the realtor's listing. Charleston is full of them. I got
lots of neighbors, here on the Ashley River about 8 miles upriver,
that have them. Noone ever goes out on them. They're just there
blocking traffic on the waterway. If I had my way the only way they'd
be allowed to put a dock on the water is IF THEY NEEDED IT TO DOCK
THEIR BOAT!....dammit. All other docks would be removed, making
navigation much safer, especially at night when the UNLIT dock just
waits for the unsuspecting.....

You don't know how much I wanted to stop and go shake that Cracker's
hand. He looked like the most contented person on Earth, sitting
there watching his kids jumping off that old rickety dock....something
to be really envied in this whirlwind world we live in.

By the way, I live in an old trailer in an old trailer park on the
Ashley, the only one left. A hodge-podge of a house around the corner
on the water will cost you $800K. I get to live here for
$195/month....(c;....less than that homeowner's TAXES.

3600 planes with transponders are burning 8-10 million
gallons of kerosene per hour over the USA. R-12 car air
conditioners are responsible for the ozone hole, right?

Larry:

I admit, I am a 5th generation cracker. I guess like most ppl once
you realize you really like your home you hate to see it get screwed
up. I often sail to Dog Island across from Carabelle and until
recently they had no phone service and had to use VHF but with the new
cell tower in Carabelle theres just too much communicatin goin on. I
think we oughta burn John Gorrie in effigy in Apalach every year cuz
when air conditionin was invented, it was all downhill fer Florida.

Hey, if it weren't for AC in FL, my parents would have moved in with me! And my 82 year
old father-in-law still supports himself with making AC parts. Thank you, John Gorrie!

T'aint just yankees, it's addle-brained (sub)urbanites in general. They
move to get away from a culture they hate, then bust ass to impose it on
us. Too much crime? Find a place where there isn't any then whine for
city type gun laws. Tired of gummymint interference? Move to the country
and lobby for zoning laws. No privacy? Build a nice secluded home but
call the sheriff every time they hear a gunshot 'cuz it might be a
neighbor killing (sob) Bambi. Buy a "ranch" (anything over a half acre),
fence it and post "No Trespassing" signs, then wonder why the natives
shun them. Finally, fear of being 'alone in the woods' drives them into
"neighborhoods" exactly like the ones they just fled; there to demand
laws to 'protect the children' from learning where meat comes from and
privacy fences around farms to keep them from seeing animals having sex!
Might turn them into perverts y'know. ....

My theory is that (sub)urban folks breath so much carbon monoxide as
kids that it ruins their brains. Why else would *anyone* think that
living cheek to jowl in a tenement, condo or neighborhood is *better*
than a doublewide on 100 acres? But the real problem is they think gotta
"save" sane happy people like us from having to live like we do!! That's
why so many of them voted for Al Gore. )c:|

Vito and Larry,
This was so funny to read because you described most of my neighbors to a
tee!! I moved to NC from NH two years ago because I love boating and hated
to see the boat laid up on the hard for 6 months and
snow,,,,,,,well,,,,,snow just sucks!
I bought into a "boating community" and I am the only one that ever uses my
boat! All that my neighbors do are bitch about rules and regulations and sit
their fat asses on their lawnmowers circling their "half acre" for four
days!
I really did screw up moving into a development and think about it every
time I walk out the front door and hear the guy yell from accross the street
telling me what time my shades went up in my house. I can't fart without
breaking a rule!
Screw it. In three weeks we will be off for a month or two on the boat. Just
us and the cat......I can't wait.

Phil,

You oughta move up to the REAL New Hampshire! Unfortunately
we get a lot more snow, but we don't have many rules, no condo
associations, none of that crap! Of course there isn't any salt water
up here, but there are plenty of lakes and there aren't many boats on
them.

Best,
