Capt. Bill,

Spoken like a true Smart ass.

Thanks.

If you have a captain license,

I do.

and if you in fact are a boater of any sort,

I am, of some sort.

you
would know many many times you do not see day shapes, proper lighting, etc.

Yes, I do know that.
Don't see how that translates into not needed to learn/know them. In fact, if
you don't learn them, how would you know if the shape is missing or if the
lighting your seeing/showing is improper?

But
beyound that, there is a mountain of information that you must know to pass
the
captains test, that truly has no relevence to the reality of most boating.

I'd say there's a small amount of info that has no relevence to reality. But
then your boating reality and mine may differ.

back at ya!

Your serve.

Lighten up Sterling! It's only the internet. :-)

Having just obtained a 50 ton Masters of the Great Lakes, I can tell you
that the schools tell you how to pass the test, but don't teach much
about being a captain. When you take the test you're advised to get off
your boat and get into the book, especially about Rules of the Road.

If what you say was true it would seem like it would be the other way around.

Isn't your experience in gaining your 50 ton license like any other
educational or training experience you have had? The education or training
exposes you to the subject and then tests you to ensure that you have a
minimum amount of knowledge in that subject. In most cases the education or
training teaches you the lexicon of the subject. That is the entry point.
Only experience and further study will make you truly proficient. Examples:
undergraduate education; medical education; any apprentice program in the
trades; diamond cutter; captain; etc.

That's how I see it IMHO.
