Been using it for some time.
I run it dry and find that the stuffing box is cool. If you choose to switch from flax to GFO be sure to pull the shaft and inspect for galling and other surface irregularities - most can be 'dressed' out by polishing with emery and crocus cloth. Havent had any water in the bilge from the stuffing box since I installed it. Good Stuff. In article , Roger Long wrote: Anybody used GFO packing? I've also been using it for about 5 years and it's great stuff. After
the initial adjustment, I've only had to tighten the nut a couple of times, maybe 1/8 turn each time. |

That pretty well matches my experience. I just did maintenance in that area and the three loops I put in back in 2000 are still fine. I still let a few drips in, however, as I was told not to run teflon "flax" dry. R. |

I considered using this stuff. Flax stuffing always dripped. Last time I repacked my stuffing box, I used "Syntef Stuffing Box Lube" with the flax stuffing. It worked. Standard, cheap, flax stuffing works, with the lube. Can't figure out what took me so long to get around to using it. |

The GFO is pretty cheap too if it lasts as long as they claim and
users say it does. When you factor in the incredible pain of repacking stuffing boxes like mine, it looks cheaper than flax. Flax plus the lube is only five bucks cheaper than I paid for the GFO with shipping. -- Roger Long "Jim" wrote in message nk.net... Roger Long wrote: Anybody used GFO packing?
