Default Marina rip offs and horror stories.

Ive been looking around for a suitable marina for my retirement boat in
melbourne florida and have been hearing horror stories about one
particular marina called Waterline and one other marina. I am looking
for opinions on local marinas.

Retired friend of mine told me Waterline marina hit all their customers
with a $10 per foot charge for damages to the marina during last years
hurricane season. So if you had a 40 footer you recieved a $400 bill
in the mail. Yet the marina sustained no real damage. Isnt it illegal
to bill someone without providing a product or service?

He said alot of the former customers moved their boats out but they
quickly filled up again. How can this be? If a local marina has such a
bad local reputation why do boat owners fill these places up?

He also told me that they require a security deposit and nobody local
who has moved to area marinas has gotten their security deposit back
they he knows of. Yet the marina is FULL.

I was told to avoid this marina and one called Eau gallie yacht basin?
could anyone local verify these rumors?
bob,
Gemini sailor.

Supply and demand.

Cost is not the best way to evaluate a marina in my opinion.

Shhhh....many of them passing through SC thing of Florida as a
"destination". Why, I've never figured out because there's NOTHING THERE
but condos and the Ditch...?? Go figure.

We stopped in Charleston on the trip north and were very impressed.
On the trip south however we wanted to stay further north until the
hurricane season passed, and by then we were in a hurry to get home.
SC is too cold in the winter for my taste, and home is in FL these
days. We're on a "ditch" but it is a nice one. :-)

Boats on delivery are paying crew by the day and just want to keep
moving.

As a resident and voter you should know that the Charleston County tax
office is engaging in some VERY hostile practices towards visiting
boats that may further discourage stop overs if they keep it up. Who
wants to get a 4 or 5 figure tax due notice just because their boat
was spotted in SC waters by a tax agent on any given day. It's
happening, don't ask me how I know.

They're hostile to us, too. I've copied your posting and emailed it,
minus any ID of course, to my local politicians to show what outsiders
think of the Tax Gestapo. I paid $31 personal property tax this year on
my FREE Waste Marine dingy because I had to license it for the FREE 3hp
Yamaha outboard another friend gave me. A new car here can cost you
thousands. My old Mercedes is nice and comfortable with a $13 pp tax,
thank you. I don't look at new anything any more with a title or license
to be taxed to death. It only hurts the big ticket merchants.

I'm sorry you got slammed. We all are, here.
