Default Newport 27 Auto Tiller

I have a 79 Newport 27. Tried a simrad autotiller but it turns out
that it won't work on this boat. Has anyone had any luck with any
autotillers with a newport 27?
Thanks,
David

I've sailed a Newport 27 and it handles like a stripped out C&C 27
(same hull, less weight). I see no reason why an Autohelm 1000 or its
current equivalent wouldn't work, because it's only a 6,000 lb. boat.
I use an almost antique Autohelm 1000 on my 10,000 lb Viking 33, and
it works in most situations just fine, even though it eats a lot of
amps.

Why won't the Simrad work? Are you sure you've set it up right?

I'm skeptical of the whole thing.

My Autohelm mounts in a HOLE that's drilled in a HORIZONTAL surface.
ANY horizontal surface.

The arm mounts on a ball end screw that is screwed into the tiller.

If it's the wrong height, as most are, use a block of wood. Most things
don't fit, exactly. But we adapt them.

I'm sorry, it could not possibly "not work" if it has a tiller.

Late fall I installed a Simrad TP22 autotiller on my 1959 Pearson
Triton Yawl. Seems to work fine so far. This replaced my old Navico
that finally died. The SS pin in the tiller from the old one worked on
the new one.

I used to own a Newport 27 and it was fitted with a Simrad TP-10. It worked
fine. What about the Simrad didn't work on your N27?
