Newport 27 Auto Tiller
I have a 79 Newport 27. Tried a simrad autotiller but it turns out
that it won't work on this boat. Has anyone had any luck with any autotillers with a newport 27? Thanks, David |

Thanks, David I've sailed a Newport 27 and it handles like a stripped out C&C 27 (same hull, less weight). I see no reason why an Autohelm 1000 or its current equivalent wouldn't work, because it's only a 6,000 lb. boat. I use an almost antique Autohelm 1000 on my 10,000 lb Viking 33, and it works in most situations just fine, even though it eats a lot of amps. Why won't the Simrad work? Are you sure you've set it up right? R. |

It has to do with how the cockpit is configured...the seats don't align good enough with the tiller. I was able to return the product but had to pay a 15% restocking fee, so I am trying to avoid that next time. I've been looking at the RayMarine models online but just wanted to see if anyone had any luck installing those on a N27. David I find it hard to believe that the Simrad won't work properly, but if that's true, then you will probably have the same problems with the Autohelm. A trick I use that might help you: I mounted a fixed "tiller" just for the pilot under the real tiller. This lets me use a shorter pedestal mounted on the seat for the outboard end. If you have a balanced rudder, you can probably mount further aft than they recommend, too. -- Jere Lull Xan-a-Deux ('73 Tanzer 28 #4 out of Tolchester, MD) Xan's Pages: http://members.dca.net/jerelull/X-Main.html Our BVI FAQs (290+ pics) http://homepage.mac.com/jerelull/BVI/ |

Newport 27 Auto Tiller
I'm skeptical of the whole thing.
My Autohelm mounts in a HOLE that's drilled in a HORIZONTAL surface. ANY horizontal surface. The arm mounts on a ball end screw that is screwed into the tiller. If it's the wrong height, as most are, use a block of wood. Most things don't fit, exactly. But we adapt them. I'm sorry, it could not possibly "not work" if it has a tiller. wrote: I have a 79 Newport 27. Tried a simrad autotiller but it turns out that it won't work on this boat. David AutoHelm has a variety of brackets to permit their pilots to mount on almost any configuration of tiller/cockpit seating. There are brackets that will mount the tiller pin above or below the tiller, at various heights, and other parts to mount the outboard end of the pilot at various heights above the seats, or away from the cockpit coaming. Even if AutoHelm or Simrad don't supply a suitable assortment of brackets, it should be possible to fabricate something yourself (or, if you are not mechanically inclined, to have something fabricated.) -- Peter Bennett, VE7CEI peterbb4 (at) interchange.ubc.ca new newsgroup users info : http://vancouver-webpages.com/nnq GPS and NMEA info: http://vancouver-webpages.com/peter Vancouver Power Squadron: http://vancouver.powersquadron.ca |

What about the Simrad didn't work on your N27? --Alan Gomes |

Newport 27 Auto Tiller
Late fall I installed a Simrad TP22 autotiller on my 1959 Pearson
Triton Yawl. Seems to work fine so far. This replaced my old Navico that finally died. The SS pin in the tiller from the old one worked on the new one.
