Earl Colby Pottinger November 15th 05 12:26 AM

Help, my small ship has come in, I have a dream!

1) I am unemployed - I have free time.

2) I have a brother in a coma at home that I take care of, so I can't take
too long a vacation at any one time. But I can set my time to just about
anytime.

3) I owe, I owe and I have no work to go. :)

4) I just got a letter from Visa telling me my card is now locked up.

5) I just got a call after reading the letter telling me that the land the
government was siezing from me for back-taxes was going to sell for a profit.

6) So now I have enough money to pay off *ALL* my debts - every single one!
And still have some money left over.

7) At my cabin I am busy converting a 16 foot canoe to a partly covered
sailing catamaran.

So here is my dream and questions assuming I can get the canoe properly
converted. Is my dream of cruising around the islands of the Bahamas for 1-2
weeks a valid dream? The canoe and add-ons will fit easyily on my truck, I
was planning to drive it all down to Florida, then get a lift to the Bahamas
then just cruise for a week or two.

How hard will transfering the craft to the Bahamas be?

Who is the best to contact? Airline? Cruise boat? Or the special boat
transporters? Private boats making the crossing?

What else should I be thinking off.

Could possibly be tough to get it across, but I'd look towards a mail
boat or ferry.

Some will say you're crazy, but if you choose an appropriately sheltered
area, you'll be fine if you take reasonable precautions.

That said, you might find it easier to do, say, the 10000 Islands
section of SW Florida or into the Everglades. Or if your goal is the
Bahamas, you might find it easier to go camping some place which will
likely have a kayak or Sunfish for use.

Problem, this canoe, is my first canoe. It means too much to me to sell. I
built up my cabin up North using only this one canoe for the first three
years. I have been on a lot of small lakes with this little beauty and I
know how much it can hold and how it will handle. When I took it onto Lake
Huron it got me and my ex-girlfriend across some very rough water. It is
because of the damage to the original wood work that I am rebuilding it into
a small sailing catamaran, and where am I going to find a craft like that in
the Bahamas?

Hobie Cats and Darts may be fun. But I am not after speed, I am after the
enjoyment of camping on a small beach, on a small island where there is not
another person in sight, taken there by a craft I built up with my own two
hands.

Besides, Hobies - Darts and others are usually all fiber glass. My craft
will be 50% hand crafted wood by weight by me and once you go wood you can't
go back :)

I have already been camping out of this canoe for the last twelve years. In
that time I had to deal with some very bad weather on land and my camping
gear is up to it. I have also had some very bad weather on the water, the
canoe can handle it if I keep it into the wind - plus I plan to cover a large
percentage of the top and add extra floatage chamberage to help keep out the
water and stay afloat if a storm does pop up.

That said, you might find it easier to do, say, the 10000 Islands
section of SW Florida or into the Everglades. Or if your goal is the

Ok, but the show on PBS and the surviour show on OLN that showed camping in
that area had the campers waking up to find themselves surround by sleeping
crocs. Seems they like the same areas that people like to camp. Up here in
Canada waking up to a thiefing chickmunk/mouse/rodent is normal (happens at
every popular park I have been, a poaching bear is a little rare (only had to
deal with bear twice - once a mother and cub so we left), or wolves howling
in the night (never meet any) - but srround by crocs is a little much for me.

Earl Colby Pottinger

PS. Did I mention I never, that is *NEVER* go out alone without a full
floation jacket on - and that is no matter hot it get! I made that mistake
once and once, and that was the one time the boat I was on sank like a rock.
Even to this day I still am shock at how fast a small boat fill up and head
for the bottom.

Wood eh? What ever floats your boat. I started on wood and went to GRP. I
would never go back to timber unless its for trim only. Too much work in my
opinion.

You dont have to find an identical craft. All you have to find is a suitable
craft.

I have sailed both the Bahamas and Lake Michigan and Superior in both a 22 footer and a sailing kayak. I would not recommend sailing
any of those places far from any
protected harbor with a canoe, especially in the winter. I would recommend the Exumas for the best gunkholing, or some of the outlying
islands. You might consider
a used sailboat which could either tow your canoe, or have room on deck for stowing
it. That way, you could safely sail from Florida and do passages in open waters.

Interesting, but this man is a fool.

A) He never filed plans or even a destination with a friend.

B) He started hir trip without even know where he wanted to go.

C) By himself, Cuba, Gulfstream, known coming storm, very small boat? Need I
say more?

One main reason I am thinking of the Bahamas is so I never am out of sight of
land, and have no plans to spend night on the water.

http://www.mit.edu/people/robot/yucatan/index.html

Same idiot, new problems. Come on now, this guy seem to be having fun in a
way, but all his actions seem very dumb to me. No map/charts of the before
he sets out. Dry bags that don't stay dry (what type of junk bags is he
buying?). He did not even have a completed boat when he started out, or have
a pre-arranged boat/wood store to get the needed extras.

At the very least I plan to have all the parts needed before I arrive. My
dry bags stay dry even if you push them under water, I already have some
charts and plan to buy the latest available before I go. There probably be
lots of problems ahead, but the whole reason I am posting here is to find out
what I don't know. This guy just blindly sets sail without the less bit of
preparation.

More fodder:

And thnks this looks like lots of interesting reading ahead for me.

The Keys a bad idea? Dunno. Another option is the Big Bend area of
Florida (up where the Suwanee River goes into the Gulf) There is a
canoe trail that wanders the coastline among true wilderness among
isolated islands and a few tiny towns. Perfect for the sort of vessel
you describe. The town of Cedar Key is the perfect place for such a
launch point as it has access to many of these islands. Going west,
you could reach the islands at the mouth of the Suwanee or even the
uninhabited Pepperfish Keys.
The area around Carabelle is another possibility (SW of Tallahassee) as
it has access to isolated Dog Island, western St. George Is.
(uninhabited) and St. Vincent Is. If you got tired of salt water, you
could go up the New River and get lost for the rest of your life in the
swamps. I had a homeless riend who lived for several years on a
$500Venture 21 sailboat there. He did more cruising than anybody else
I ever knew.

No, people implied that the Bahamas was a bad idea for a canoe-catamaran
tripping.

Googling right now. Found it, looks easy. Googling the Keys finds a number
of parks in the Keys themselves.

Ok, it looks like it will be Florida for the winter of 2006, and the Bahamas
in 2007. Those who wonder about the coming summer, I think I will spend my
time around the cabin doing some shake-down trip on lake Huron. If I get the
time maybe go to the Upper Channel.

If you stay away from populated areas (civilization), and are
comfortable with managing on your own, you may do OK. No one
occupying expensive real estate is going to be thrilled with you
camping out on their door step, one small step up from homless. That
includes marinas, town docks and quite a few parks.

Other than "people" problems, the next biggest issue is the inherent
unseaworthiness of your chosen craft. You WILL be capsized and
swamped at various times, it just goes with the territory.

Here in N. FL, he'd fit in pretty well as most natives in the coastal
counties (Dixie, Taylor, Wakulla, Franklin counties) are semi-employed
loggers or oystermen living fairly well on what would be below poverty
level wages anywhere else. Hardly anybody would think twice about him
camping with his boat except the damned transplanted yankees in their
condo trash towers. Fortunately, they rarely venture into the shallow
coastal wilderness so he could easily get away as long as he wanted.
With a little knowledge, it'd be nearly impossible to starve too. This
is not the usual beachy environment and can be very isolated and often
even VHF will pick up nothing
Very isolated salt marsh/mangrove islands, cabbage palms all over,
shallow flats teeming with fish with tiny crystal clear spring runs
emptying into the salt marshes........(paradise for some people).
However, he should consider swarms of mosquitoes, no-see-um bugs, the
occasional gator (not really a problem when its colder) and snakes.
The gators and snakes can be dealt with easily by watching where you
step or swim. He'll need to watch for Sting rays if he walks in the
water.
It does get cold in N. Fl. but does not stay cold for more than a few
days. A canadian will probably find the water temp swimmable year
round (my kids do, I do not).
I would not hesitate to do this.

And how many people do you think I am with when I go wilderness camping?
Most trips there rarely have more than one campsite on the same lake. And
even if I go with others they are off doing thier own thing somewhere. If
you can't handle being alone don't do real camping.

You know, it is amazing what you can get if you appoach the shore and before

Toronto to see. I want to see nature. However, I do not enjoy the cold
weather we have up here in Canada at this time of year. And no, 10-25C is
not cold to me. Bahamas in winter time is still warm to me.

And when have I ever suggested that I was planning to go to such places?

Other than "people" problems, the next biggest issue is the inherent
unseaworthiness of your chosen craft. You WILL be capsized and
swamped at various times, it just goes with the territory.

Really? Why would that be? I have been canoeing in 50KPH winds (not fun I
tell) without capsizing. I have been in 2-3 meter waves without capsizing.
Why should I capsize in the Bahamas if I am not there in the hurricane season?

Plus I have only gone out in that weather when I was up against a hard time
limit, any other time if the weather is bad I just stay inside the tent and
read a book.

Last, so I capsize. I always wear my lifejacket, and it does not matter how
hot it gets as to me 40C is nice weather, all my stuff is in water proof bags
and tied to the canoe with rope. If you ever went canoeing with Ralph you
would understand why. If I go over, I will paddle to the nearest island and
sort things out.

PS. A canoe with all it main load place on the bottom of the canoe is very
stable on water.

Help, my small ship has come in, I have a dream!

:

You know, more and more it looks like my first trips outside of Canada will
be in Florida. What is it with you people there? It seems you have the
Canada SnowBird market all locked up. :) Is there and good reasons for a
Canadain to bother see the rest of the USA?

Help, my small ship has come in, I have a dream!

In my childhood here in N. FL, I spent as much time in a canoe as I did
on a bicycle. It was a Grumman 18' that was nearly indestructible
until it got under a log on the Suwanee in flood stage. A little TIG
welding and its as good as new, now 43 yrs old it is in my back yard
ready to use. We would fill it with kids, (I have 8 siblings), take it
out into the water and tip it over on purpose and play in it. As kids,
we could never figure out why this always got the Marine Patrol so
excited.
The point is, around here, even in Winter, tipping over is often
welcome and rarely dangerous.
Another possibility for this sort of cruising is Pine Island Sound down
near Ft. Myers. I have not been there but it comes strongly
reccomended by friends.
From what I have seen, Canada has as much scenic value as most of the

US.
In South FL, you will see many Snow Birds, last year when I sailed into
the area south of Sarasota I thought I was in Wisconsin because all the
people there looked and talked like my in-laws from there. N. FL is
very different. From north of Clearwater along the coast to just east
of Panama City, you will see almost no tourists.

Depends on what coast you live on in Canada. Southern California ( San
Diego) can be nice.
The thing is...if you' re flying south during our winter season...
you may as well go where you can pretend it's summer. In January &
February your choices on the mainland USA are limited.

Do the Florida thing...and then try Cuba.
I spent a week at Orlando and a few days at St. Pete's and I have no
great desire to rush back. I'd like to do the entire Florida Keys trip
at least once..but there are a number of islands east of there that are
calling me first.

I am starting from Oshawa/Whitby that is just outside of Toronto, Ontario.
The canoe/outriggers go on top of my truck and I can drive down to anywhere
on the East coast with ease. So far I have not recieve any suggestions that
make it seem worthwhile to go to West Coast, and it will be easyier to stick
to Canada anyway as I have friends who do know B.C. and would be happy to
give me tips. Looks like Florida is the place to go in my short term plans.

This doesn't make any sense. If you are looking to get out of winter
don't come west. They don't call it the wet coast for nothing.

=================================================

50KPH is about 25 to 30 knots. Not an everyday occurrence in the
Bahamas but fairly frequent any time of year. With that kind of wind
and a strong opposing current (not uncommon), you can get some very
steep breaking seas which routinely capsize 20 to 24 foot powerboats
weighing thousands of pounds. Don't think it can't happen to you.

In the winter months the bad weather comes mostly from northerly cold
fronts but you can also get thunder squalls at any time. It sounds
like you are mentally and physically prepared for some tough going,
and if so, you'll probably do all right. Do not expect a walk in the
park however.

I agree with Don, San Diego is nice but where you gonna sail to there?
It is pretty but sorta crowded. You'd really have to keep a lookout to
keep from hitting anybody.
