okay is it just me, or is this not the most depressing time of the year?
I'm 50, and I've been on sailboats since I was 14 but I just can't get
over how depressed I get each and every friggin year when I have to put
the old girl to bed for the winter. I promise to grow up one of these
days, just not one of these days soon ;-P

Mon... you need a change in latitude... or at least a change in
location! October is fantastic here in Sausalito.

October in Charleston Harbor is great....well, once the tropical storm
stops dumping the ocean over my house it will be...

Time 1AM...temperature outside 73.9F...sure lots better than July or
August. Water temp in harbor - 77F! No need to worry about hull freezing
or hypothermia swimming.

Well I dunno ... I was out thursday ... nobody else was out ... that was the
depressing part to me. So I take the edge off by actually looking forward to
putting the boat away ... winterizing the engine, cleaning, waxing, throwing
out that clutter that accumulates, covering it up ... so it's all ready to
go next season : )

It's a latitude thing. At least we northerners get a chage of scenery twice
a year.

Dennis.

C'mon down to N. FL. You can sail mine as I am currently too busy.
Sailing season has just started as the heat is abating enough.

Had a fantastic sail in Kingston (Ontario) harbour on Thursday night in
my buddy's Mirage 29. I had just lowered my Aloha's mast and badly
needed a sailing 'fix'. We were almost alone out there and the wind
came up to 15 knots. Just for us. Zoom!

Yeah, I'm 53. You never get over that post partum depression of lift
out. When I ski in February, I keep thinking 'ready about!!" as I
plant my pole.

i've missed my buddy's mirage 33 that he sold last year.
Now he's eving a Bristol 32. We went down to see it on a beautiful
Wednesday afternoon. Gorgeous from a slight distance...but inside cabin
shows a bit of the 39 years use.
he likes it though, so I may be sailing in style again
(vs my Sandpiper 565)

I'm sorta pining for the southern latitudes this time of year, but then
again, winter is the only time of the year that I can get any work done
on the house -- and after 5 years in Florida, I REALLY missed the
seasons and *never* got used to their version of summer.

If the weather's not too bad, we'll probably be sailing the Chesapeake
into November. Fall colors and the geese flocking up are magical on the
Bay. With good winds and no powerboats, it almost balances the lack of
sunning temps.

LOL, I used to do the same thing when I was transferred to Colorado

Well, not for me, it hasn't been. I sail out of Toronto and just had a
great week of sailing down to Belleville and back with overnights at
Cobourg. The weather for the first three days was amazing and in the
mid 20s (80F) but we saw no sailboats out on Lake Ontario. Then a
front moved in, it ****ed rain and got down to 5 C (40 F) at night and
12 C (54F) in the day, but with an unusually persistant NNE-NE strong
breeze of 25 knots or so.

So we rode that puppy home until it died. Two metre or better waves
are easier to take if they're following, I'll tell you. But we hit
hull speed and better with a No. 3 and a full main secured with my
newly made up preventers. Funnily, we saw more boats out in the cold,
stiff breeze than in the much warmer, but patchy, air of earlier in
the week.

Biggest issues? Condensation when it ****ed down black sheets of rain
all day Friday and made the boat a little drippy inside, and a snapped
pin on the topping lift. The rolly seas (for Lake Ontario) were a
challenge in the galley until we got sail up, and I need to consider a
PCV kit for my rebuilt Atomic 4, which otherwise drove the boat
superbly when we had a canal to transverse or a stretch of calm.

The solution to the October sailing blues in northern latitudes is to
sail in October. We haul out Oct. 21 here. I plan to sail until about
the 18th or so, then haul the mast.

well prodigal, as i read this i am sipping on a margarita in sunny
south florida. its a balmy 85 degrees with a light breeze ouf of the
east. A most pleasant day, many more to come here. may i suggest you
see a psychiatrist for an anti depressant medication. it sounds like it
could fix your mental state. but thank you for your post. it brings a
smile to my face. sometimes the suffering of others makes ones place in
life more agreeable.
