Coasties get high marks
You guys may bitch and moan about Coast Guard boardings but during Katrina
when the s*#t hit the fan they were the only Federal organization that kept theirs together. Kinda refreshing to know that one Federal organization that we rely on believes on acting first and asking permission later. I can say the same about NOAA. (That organization that Rick Santorum wants to muzzle.) The Hurricane prediction Center tried for days to get the political hacks that infested FEMA and DHLS off their collective posteriors. -- Glenn Ashmore I'm building a 45' cutter in strip/composite. Don't forget that the NWS gave the Mayor of N.O. a 4 day heads up to evacuate the city, which was ignored until only 24 hrs before it hit. krj |

Both the USCG and USN operate under the guidelines of "Command by Negation". In other words, just press on until ordered to cease. |

Lawyers, boy are you on target
Just look at the job openings of the highly tauted Homeland Security Department employment website .... if the posting isnt for a minimum wage baggage, etc. inspector, then its for an attorney for extreme wages.. Same thing happened to the "Super Fund" for cleanup of toxic waste sites ..... zillions if $$$ were spent and probably 90% went to shyster fees/costs. If you look deeply into MOST government programs, etc. youll find out that most of costs can be deemed to be .... welfare for shysters. I was saying to my wife the other day that a major part of the problem seems to be that FEMA was run by a lawyer. Lawyers may be good at talking their way into a position, but once there it looks like the ones at FEMA, at least, were more worried about whether they had authority to solve the problems than they were about actually solving them. I suspect this is a problem not limited to FEMA. Dave |

That would be "government" with a very Southern accent.
I was in New Orleans the Sat. night before the storm hit. Eerie, walking around the French Quarter with most places open, but about 1/4 the normal crowd. Some places boarding up, sandbags up about 12". Wondered if we'd ever see it like that again. Fortunately, the Europeans who founded the place built on the highest ground, so the history French Quarter was mostly spared. Not so well for the low lying areas built on later. Yea, the mayor was a total dumb****. |
