Broken cam shaft reliability data.
I wonder if someone has some reliably data concerning broken cam shaft on
diesel engine. I have never seen a cam shaft to snap under normal load. The cam shaft on my 1GM Yanmar broke in two pieces. Being a drop forged casting it requires a fantastic impact to break in two. Unless it is from an original hair line crack at fabrication that was not detected at the time. |
if you have the camshaft you should be able to see if it was a casting
flaw - i had a driveshaft that snapped like that and was incredibly obvious was a manufacturing defect, the dealer didnt even discuss it when he saw it and just replaced it. The engine (1982 model) was rebuild a year ago. At this time I can not
determine if there was a flaw in the drop forged casting. I can only speculate that the cam shaft broke in two because of misalignment.
