Can you imagine?
Last fall, I was soliciting opinions in this group about an early
spring transit of Lake Erie to deliver the 32 foot sailboat we bought in Detroit. It seemed like a great idea at the time. The original plan would have had me leaving Detroit last Wednesday, arriving in Buffalo on Friday, and spending the weekend preparing for the canal trip. Can you imagine? Am I ever glad we decided to bring the boat on a truck. -- Roger Long |

We seem to be getting a lot more easterly in our lower Great Lakes winds than I recall. I know it was an issue on windward-leeward club racing last couple of years. R. |

As a matter of fact I drive a hybrid vehicle but I am also a scientist and am simply pointing out that your assertion that you can tell anything about global climate changes based on two years of local data or anecdotal evidence is ridiculous. |
I don't think he is doing that at all.
If you see a bird, you might say, "There's one of that group that migrate through here every year." You have no direct evidence that there is a group. It could be the last one left as far as first hand observation goes. Seeing it confirms what you know from other sources though. -- Roger Long |

Dear Prof. Corey, Your inability to place my comments in context renders your conclusions invalid. If you choose to conclude that there is no global climatic warming event in progress, please carry on without regard to the alarmingly large body of current empirical evidence available for your scientific analysis. Here's wishing you warm, fresh breezes, from the east or any quadrant for that matter. |

Here's wishing you warm, fresh breezes, from the east or any quadrant for that matter. You are doing it again, jumping to conclusions without knowing all the facts. I never said that I didn't think there is some global climate change occuring. Take the time to read what I said, I made no argument one way or the other about global climate change. My only comment was that you are basing your assertion on irrelevant information and you are doing it again by assuming that I disagree with you. |

Here's wishing you warm, fresh breezes, from the east or any quadrant for that matter. Inconclusive. Mathematical algorithms used to analyse the last 10,000 or so years erred in forcing the numbers to generate the famous "hockey stick" of graphed temperature rises, widely reported a while ago. Discussions continue. Plants need CO2, growing faster as the quantity increases, any old plants. Only the top layer of leaves gets full sun. The climate varies with the sun's output. We are all doomed, anyway. Get used to it. Lighten up. Terror is a weapon used to control inflation, amongst other things. Do your kids need locator anklets? Don't believe everything you are fed on TV or here. The way to stop any supposed methane caused greenhouse effect is to stop raising and eating large amounts of meat. There are other benefits. High efficiency lighting means less requirement for air conditioning, as would boxing and venting your refrigerator coils and insulating your hot water heater, which might better be replaced by an in line demand heater and black water pipe on your roof. In the same way, using a few percent less energy in cars and at home will flood the market with surplusses while reducing the dreaded CO2, which is like ****, misunderstood, mishandled and maligned unfairly. Most stores and offices are air conditioned too cold for comfort in summer dress. The energy guys want you to waste energy. They make money on it all. Just as the gov passed the double nickel, they could legislate limits on air conditioning temperature, but libertarians and professional wastrels would never catch their wigs. I think wigs should be taxed. Serendipity is sweet. Terry K |

You must have a serious sailing jones there Rhys. ;-) You've got a heater below yes? Anyway, have you noticed the weather charts recently? This is a continuation of the pattern I've been noticing over the last few years i.e., the continuous, rapid re-spawning of low pressure systems over the midwest which stall over the Great Lakes and produce protracted periods of E quadrant wind/weather. Of course some seasoned sailors might say that this is the normal course of weather but the last two spring/summer periods have been anomalous in my 35 years of observing/sailing on the Great Lakes. Currently we can see the remains of an absolutely huge low over James Bay that has been joined by two other new large lows NE of the Lakes. Weird is all I can say. As far as wind data is concerned, there is frankly too much of it to be summarized here. Check out these links or do a search such as wind +data +archives at google.ca Some of the data sources are proprietary and need payment for access. http://rredc.nrel.gov/wind/pubs/atlas/ http://www.climat.meteo.ec.gc.ca/Welcome_e.html Good sailing! |

I can't say I've analysed the "big picture" but I have noticed the greater share of east wind plus a lot of intense downdrafting and local squalliness that is not right for early May. I also have noticed that the barometer's holding low and steady for long periods (your "stuck lows") and yet the weather is not matching the typical pressure profiles. Nor are the forecasters doing well lately. As far as wind data is concerned, there is frankly too much of it to be summarized here. Thanks, I will bookmark these and factor them in to my weather watching. |
