If you get out there in the Rigolets and the Pearl, post some details of your trip. The trip from French Settlement to the Pearl will be a long one. But once you are in the Pearl, it worth the trip upriver. I have been cannoeing from Bogolusa to Hwy 90 bridge, and boating (28' Carver) thru much of the lower Pearl system. For the most part, the West Pearl is deep, with many beaches along the way. Lots of bugs in the late afternoon, early evening. The Tchefuncte River has a small beach at the mouth (at Lake Pontcartrain) on the east side. It's small, but there are many local boaters there most weekends. There is a free launch opposite this beach. All of the islands south of Mississippi are worth the trip to see. The south end of Cat Island (Smugglers Cove on the charts) is a popular anchorage for all size boats. Many camp on the beach. By the way, there are great arial shots of Cat Island (as well as all of South Louisian) at www.lacoast.gov select MAPS, then select 2000 Louisiana Coastwise Arial Photography. Select the Gulfport Block, select 888, 890, 892. In 890, the spit of land at the bottom is smugglers cove. Great place to visit. Happy Boating |
