Danger in ICW: Now Boat U.S. Weighs In

After my earlier warning, now Boat US has a brief article in its
November 2004 issue of Boat U.S. magazine about the risks and dangers
of travelling the ICW after the recent hurricanes -- some inlets and
channels silted (to less than three feet), channel markers disappeared
or moved, sunken boats and trees. Beware.

Following is the text of the BoatUS warning
"Warning to Snowbirds
Thousands of cruising “snowbirds” are being warned by Florida
officials to expect inlets silted in, shoals shifted and navigational
markers blown away by the two hurricanes. There is a high likelihood
that debris is still hidden underwater along both coasts, including
submerged trees, docks and boats. Florida marine police urge skippers
to slow down, keep a sharp lookout, adhere to many new no-wake zones
and don’t rely only on channel markers which may be “gone with the
wind.”"
Florida officials are encouraging all to "come on down". No reason
not to go. Just take care as you should be doing anyway.

Dude the ICW is deader than a dodo. Couple of years from now you'll be able
to travel about 15 feet on it.

Directed someone looking for a Marine Trader to your site again. Don't forget
that finders fee.

PS I passed by Key Largo yesterday.
I waved, did you see me?

one foot that's nuts! Mine's 4 feet with fixed keel. I've heard 2 feet
with daggerboard but never 1 foot.

Sounds like the time to get on it to me, My 25' sailboat only draws 1
foot w/keel up. Should not have to worry about a crowded achorage.
Going slow is my normal rate of speed anyway :-)

Most would not consider my McGregor 26 a "Real" sailboat, but without
waterballast and swingkeel up, it really only draws about 12". I've
had the boat since 2002 and really like it. I only use the headsail
during light winds without the ballast though. It won't win races, but
its a nice waterbago.

Finally, a honest man!

"Waterbago"...that's hilarious...

I've heard a lot of crap about Mac 26Xs over the years, and when I
finally saw one at a show I wondered what all the fuss was about. OF
COURSE it's not a great sailboat, and it's probably only mediocre as a
powerboat, but it's better than a log with a sheet on a stick and no
doubt is perfectly adequate to the sort of daysailer/gunkholer who has
little time and calm, local waters.

After all, if you want a sailing experience, you can get a Shark for
5K, go out in 30 knots and bump your head on the way to the "waste
bucket".

I like Sharks and quarter-tonners as well, but I have no illusions
about them.

NC really fell down on the job WRT the ICW. A shame since
it in their economic interest to keep the ICW maintained.

That has nothing to do with the hurricanes... the ICW in the southern
part of NC is silted because it hasn't been dredged......

...so if you thing you have to go as far as Florida to have
problems.... nope... see:

I also like the idea that my Mac26 was tied down in the driveway
throughout Ivan, of which the eye went over my house, and is one of
the few boats that survived the Lakeforest yacht club marine that is
now just a boat launch with many pilings to tie to. It is a good
weekend gunkholer, and I tow it up a hundered miles and put in at a
lake for a different kind of sailing or tow it down to Port St Joe
Florida. Different Strokes.
