found out his parents and kids had screwed up so much that
his cruising hopes are pretty much dashed forever. This after
buying and outfitting a nice boat for the past 3 years.

He should abandon his parents and kids to their own devices, cast off
and be done with them.

That may be a minority view, but don't claim it isn't the first thing
that crosses a sailor's mind....
