Flying Pig theory du jour

I think I know how this is going to turn out. My guess is that FP
hove to under sail about 3:45AM yesterday, got some rest, created a
semi-wandering track, and forgot to reactivate the SPOT. Their
first reported positions today were near, but not on, a shoal. I'm
further guessing that they anchored there for the night and were
awakened this morning by the sound of a Falcon jet buzzing them.

What do you think about the claim from the anoni-mice below that one
of them called the Coast Guard?

I talked with S&L quite a bit about the SPOT and I know we went over
the idea of telling your friends and family not to panic or do
anything just because tracking goes off. It wouldn't surprise me a
bit to find out that the claim was true but we'll probably never know.

He should be able to tell you who called in the report. It's likely
not classified information.

Skip could probably verify that it wasn't one of his friends. He's
close to landfall, so we may get an update from the horse's mouth
shortly.

Just a quickie as I'm going in for customs.

None of the preceding here or in the other thread is true, other than,
prolly, my failure to negotiate the stupid SPOT
on/"OK"/on-again/off/no-more-than-24-hours ****. Not aground, not in
distress, not in dangerous weather or water. No contact with either BASRA
or USCG who left messages on my Vonage number. No hails heard (radio off
when we're sleeping, and the day in question, where there was nobody in
sight; likely we missed it). CG left their message at the same time I was
on with the maritime Mobile ham net; perhaps they told them - but nobody
there mentioned an alert.

No crew, no family member alerted or cancelled.

More later after I have some down time. Couple posts to the liveaboard
list and my log (click the yahoogroups link) will give more detail...

Someone here could do me a great favor and find out who called it in as well
as who cancelled it. I'm more than ****ed at the waste of resources and
unnecessary alarm it created. Failing that, when I get to a place with
sufficient bandwidth, I'll call them myself.
