What happens when the boat STOPS and you hear a really loud BANG!!!!

Let's say you're sailing along, nice breeze, boat is heeled just about
right & driving like a bullet.... suddenly there's a very loud BANG!!!
and the boat stops (nearly throwing everybody off the front) as though
it hit a wall (or perhaps a submerged locomotive).

Let's say the helmsman reports that the boat is steering OK, so
obviously the daggerboard isn't broken clean off; but you look down
into the trunk and see suspicious looking spintery fiberglass chunks.

Let's say, this really happened but it's nothing we can't fix... in
fact, the first stage of repair is already started.

BTW if any of you are planning to sail the upper Neuse River any time
soon, let me know and I'll tell you where this object is located
(approximately); it is in water that lots of people sail over & around
often without our luck.

Hopefully the 'board will be fixed before next weekend.

Similar circs happened to me en route to Clearwater. Fla. I was told
that I'd run over a turtle.. but who knows? Charts said 8-9' and when
the boat titled forward it was very scary because it was totally
unexpected.

I had this happen in the channel to Steinhatchee, FL the week after
the "Storm of the Century". We checked and found no water coming in
and no apparent damage so went on in to Steinhatchee. Coast Guard
boat later warned us about a truck that had washed out to sea, we told
them we found it for them. Dove under the boat and found deep gouges
but no real damage to encapsulated keel.

When I was a kid at summer camp I saw a dead snapping turtle that was
about four foot long in the shell. Over two hundered pounds. This in a
small Minnesota lake. I understand some salt water turtles run much
bigger.

Sure, sea turtles get a little bigger, but a 4' snapping turtle would
be a dangerous beast... probably could drag away livestock!
Considering that they can be aggressive (at least, the ones we have
down here are, but hopefully they don't get that big) they could
bemore dangerous than alligators...

Yes, much bigger.

We once saw a dead sea turtle washed up on a beach on Nantucket that
was about 7 to 8 feet long and at over a foot thick. It probably
weighed over 1,000 pounds.
