Default Economic Florida Storage Yard?

My wife and I are working on the purchase of a 41' sailing vessel in
Lighthouse Point Florida and are needing an economical storage yard to store
it from September 'till December. Any ideas?

Glenn.

Default Economic Florida Storage Yard?

Hi, Glenn, and wife,

We bought our boat nearby - there's *NO* economic storage within a hundred
miles of Lighthouse point. Depending on the height of the mast, you may be
able to go toward the Okechobee - there's some relatively inexpensive yards
in that area, but I can't speak to their safety and security. Generally the
further north you go the less it will cost until you get closer to Jax.

OTOH, if you want a nice cruise, and your draft isn't more than about 5 feet
(see archives for why this is important!) take it around to the Charlotte
Harbor area. There's two yards, one of which is exclusively storage
(All-American Boat Storage) at $3 per foot per month. Right next door, with
the ability to do work on the boat, either yourself or contractors, is
another whose name escapes me (someone here will know - but I think it's
Charlotte Harbor Boat Storage), but whose rates are only something like $4
per foot. That's where we were headed since we wanted to get some work
done, and AABS wouldn't let us do any work whatsoever, whomsoever, when our
supposedly OK depth got us firmly and inextricably (other than the TowBoatUS
line) stuck on the way in the channel.

Of course, since you're only talking about 3 months, perhaps that level of
difference isn't important enough to travel. In our case, it's likely to be
almost a year...

"And then again, when you sit at the helm of your little ship on a
clear night, and gaze at the countless stars overhead, and realize
that you are quite alone on a great, wide sea, it is apt to occur to
you that in the general scheme of things you are merely an
insignificant speck on the surface of the ocean; and are not nearly
so important or as self-sufficient as you thought you were. Which is
an exceedingly wholesome thought, and one that may effect a
permanent change in your deportment that will be greatly appreciated
by your friends." - James S. Pitkin
