What civilization can hope to succeed, or even continue to survive, when 1
adult in 31 is in the prison system? In the history of humanity, has this
ever happened before? Even in the darkest days of the worst governments ever
to exist?

Probably not. Used to be the crims were about 1 in 10, and ran loose.
It was more exciting then.
Prisons are progress, but boring as hell. MSNBC devotes a lot of time
to prison docos. Must be real cheap to film there.
Best way to avoid the crims is to go sailing.
But watch who you select for crew.

Oh, I dunno. Stop jailing people for victimless "crimes," perhaps. But
considering that housing prisoners is a hugely profitable business, their
lobby probably won't allow that to happen.

And something like a half a million are in the slammer for non-violent
drug related reasons. Seems like the drug eradication program isn't
working.

Can't put all those guards out of work can you? We need the jobs!
Seriously, the drug thing is out of control. Is the Dutch method
better? I dunno.
I'm not even sure what a victim less crime is. Not wearing a helmet on
your bicycle? Seat belts? Madoff?
The heck with it. I'm going sailing for a couple days.
