Reminds of when I first went aboard my Navy destroyer and asked a salt
how to get to the forecastle. He said,
"What the **** are you talking about?"

Why? Because they used "Gun Wall" instead of "gunwale"?

That is what it means.

Etymology: 1466, gonne walle, or in modern English, gun plank,,,

No, I need one that hasn't got a half cup of Sprite down its

nothing seems to work and it's a brand new laptop...

The only way to clean it is to take out the keyboard, soak it in water, dry
(completely of course), and reinstall. You could also use some isopropyl,
but you have to be very conservative with it.That might not fix the problem
entirely, but it'll help. I did something similar to my old laptop and it's
working fine except for a single key that tends to be a bit mushy. It's not
easy to do, so you might want to bring it in to a local service place.
They've got the tools to pop it right out. Shouldn't cost all that much.

Yeah, basically, you have to remove a number of screws on the bottom (the
correct ones), then the cover opens up. Every laptop is a bit different, so
if you're not comfortable doing it, take it somewhere.

Plain-vanilla PC keyboards are dirt cheap, you can pick one up for less than
$20. If you want a fancier one, you can spend double that, or even more if
you really want to go all-out with the bells and whistles thing.

Not so much bigger as at least farther apart. I used the calculator
that takes no prisoners, the HP48 for about ten years before I noticed
that the number and arithmatic keys, the block in the lower right
corner, are fifty % wider than the rest.

I would rinse with distilled water, blow dry with compressed air and
place in a 130 degree oven for an hour or two. I spilled an ounce of
coffee on a keyboard and I flipped it over instantly. The stuff didn't
have time to penetrate. No problems. I like those IBM jobs that have a
positive click when you press them. They used to cost over a hundred
new I think they quit making them, but there is ebay.

I use only IBM keyboards, the big heavy ones with the positive click
feel. Two from Salvation Army, five bucks ea, one from ebay. I think
they cost over a hundred twenty years ago.

I think I know the ones you're talking about. I also remember paying a lot
of money for keyboards back in the day, around the time "Windows for
Workgroups" came out, when I used to build my own computers. But we used to
go to computer swap meets then and could pick up some really good deals. Do
they still have computer swap meets?

Ah, that's a bit different, but in a good way. Laptop keyboards come out
easily and give you a plain circuitboard with contact switches/membrane
switches. With the batteries out and the power cord disconnected, you just
remove the top cover, remove and unplug the keyboard, take off the keytops,
and clean away. It's a really good idea to take pictures of the keyboard so
that you put the keytops back where they are supposed to go when you're
finished. For the actual cleaning, you should pick up a can of anti-static
multipurpose cleaner made specifically for computers. Office Depot has it,
as does Radio Shack and probably any other electronics/computer store. Use
lint-free pads and the anti-static cleaner, restore the keytops, and Bob's
your uncle.
