Used Iridium Phones

Are there any gotchas I need to worry about (besides whether the phone
is broken) when buying a used Iridium? Ebay has ads mentioning things
like "not blacklisted" and "needs a SIM card you can buy anywhere." I
don't know what this blacklist is and can you really buy a SIM card
anywhere?
