Default oarlocks

Bill,

I have an 18' pulling boat that I raced before daughter came along.

The formulas posted by others seem fine. After you figure out where you
want the oarlocks
think about making the seat adjustable.

My seat was on rails and could be put 3" forward or aft. I have 3 sets of
peg holes for the footrests too. After rowing for a while I decided that I
wanted my oars a bit higher above my legs so I took the seat out and put a
cushion on the floorboard, that is where I row now.

A bit of flexibility is nice to have if your boat design allows it.

How do you determine the correct placement of oarlocks in relation to the
rowing seat position?
Is there a formula or rule of thumb used to determine this distance?

Bill
