Hello,

I would like to build a 9 meters motor boat with round form in WEST
technology in which I am experienced on small boat (6mtr). Diagonal strip
lines of plywood should be used with epoxy and finaly laminated with

rowing.
Inboard motor is prepaired Mercedes 300D with 90PS. Form should be
displacement/semidisplacement with speed aproximately 10 knots cruising

and
12 knots max.. I found od www.tadroberts.com something for studing White
pine, Douglas fir and Yellow cedar, nice forms but still to far from good
plan to start bulding.
So, if you got free plans or good site please notice me.

I don't get it. You want to build a 9 meter boat, which will cost you
several thousands of euros or dollars, but you want free plans???

This is not a matter of not wanting to help someone. This is about decent
plans and the price you pay for it. If you want to build a 8 ft or 2 meter
dinghy, there are quite a few free plans out there on the net. And such a
desing would alse make a free plan viable. you can build a plywood dinghy
for a few tens of bucks worth of plywood. However, building a 9 meter boats
is quite different. First, I think you don't find any free plans for that,
and second, like I said before, the price of a decent set of plans is small
compared to the price you end up paying for the materials of the entire
boat. I mean, you can find a decent plan for a 9 meter motorboat for $150
(Woodenboat plan 53, a 32' power cruiser from Eldredge-McInnis). That might
be just 1% of the total cost of building the boat.

you can't just cold mould any hull shape. even when the hull shape is
designed for cold moulding its a very time consuming process shaving the
strips to conform to the shape fo the hull. you are not just putting one
layer on the hull so it has to be done all over again for each layer. I
think TF Jones says 1 hour per sq ft per layer to do the cold moulding
part of the boat construction.

I think there are some boatbuilders riding high horses. I thought all
designers ripped off other people's designs. That's what boat designers
do. Can anyone name anyone who has designed a boat with no research or
study of other people's boats? There are even books that recommend copying
sail plans and things from exsiting boats because there are no analytical
methods. Right here in this newsgroup not so long ago several people wrote
that I could not possibly figure out how much sail a boat could carry
mathematically because there were too many variables. I was told to copy.
By a boat designer or builder, I don't know which. :)

Also there are lots of free boats. I believe Wooden Boat magazien has a
section at the back devoted to free boats. Its unfortunagte that there are
many neglected boats but that's the nature of boat ownership. One does
not buy a recreational boat for any practical reason. They are bought to
enhance one's self image and when they don't, or they require work,
people become disatisfied with them and they become neglected. Enough end up
changing hands for free. Some of which are donated to charity.

Need Free Plans . . . Plus!

I've decided to quit my job and build a sailboat, and need a little help.

Does anyone know where I can find free plans? Please don't tell me to go to
the library, because reading all those books is a lot of work. As a matter
of fact, if you know a designer who will create a set of plans for precisely
the boat I want, for free, that would be quite nice.

I realize the plans are a small part of the total cost of the boat.
Therefore I would also like to know if you know of anyone who will donate
the materials I will need. I could cut down trees and find someone to mill
them for me, but that's even more work than going to the library, and I
really want a modern boat. If you have a really large supply of carbon fiber
that would be ideal, but I would settle for the right assortment of
fiberglass.

As others have pointed out in this newsgroup, you will also have to come up
with the engine, plumbing, electronics, lighting and other gear I need, plus
of course the masts (I'd really like two, thanks very much) and sails.
Dacron if that's the best you can do, but I really think I deserve Kevlar.

Now I realize that building a sailboat of a size adequate for my needs is a
major project, and of course I don't plan to do it alone. In fact I am much
better at organizing than at working with my hands, so for those of you who
really want to get lots of great practical experience with boatbuilding,
this is your chance.

If you can't spare the time to help, but can supply the boatyard space
(actually, I will require a heated, well-lighted work area) or have several
tons of lead for the keel, I'd be willing to accept that.

HELLO FROM CROATIA - land of the most beautifull see and little ships!

Been twice to Croatia (Opatija), on my honeymoon and later in the season
again. Unfortunately I wasn't caught by the boatbuilding virus then. But it
sure was beautiful!

behind a computer screen)

I thought all designers ripped off other people's designs.
That's what boat designers do.
Can anyone name anyone who has designed a boat with no research or
study of other people's boats?

I once walked in a major (and I mean major) designer's office while they
were working on the concept drawings of a new boat.
There were plans and pictures all over the place, they had graphs of data
about other boats and a list of desired features mostly referring to other
designs.
I would not trust a design that is not based on research and data compiled
from previous designs.
We have a library of hundreds of plans and spreadsheets full of data from
boats designed by others. I would not start a new design without studying in
detail what has been done before.
The novice will often think: "That design looks very much like a Bolger,
it's a copy . . " not knowing that Bolger got the idea from Sucher who
collected and analyzed data taken from boats he measured on the waterfront
and those boats themselves were the product of an evolution etc. etc.
The problem is the lack of knowledge of the neophyte.
The art of the designer is to pick all those features and blend them in an
harmonious new and original design. That assumes that he also understands
what works and doesn't.
There is much out there not worth copying, it usually comes from amateur
designers who did not do their homework. They try to be different not
knowing that it has been done and failed..
Their weird plans are like no others, they don't "copy".

Hello to ALL of you,

building some electronic device I always helped him. I gave him schematic
diagram if I had one but did not made a device. That is for what I asked

I understand that many peoples live from selling boat plans, I understand
that they hate even word "free" but what I can not understand is why they
can not read headline of my question I WROTE: "FREE BOAT PLANS" ?!?
Thanks to all of you who understood my words and helped me not only by great
