I want to be absolutely certain that I have this right...

off using epoxy to fair it?


Yes, that is correct. In the quantities you are going to be using the
difference in cost in very small, and the lack of smell from epoxy is a nice
bonus. Epoxy does cause a skin reaction in some people so wear vinyl or
latex gloves to protect your skin.
