fir plywood "checks". the surface expands and contracts with changes
in temperature and humidity, particulary in direct sunlight so I've read.
as a result any finish you put on it develops hairline cracks. one way to
suppress it is to put on lots of polyester or epoxy resin but that adds
weight.
