Default Porta-bote? Polypropilyne boat?

Hey there everyone,

I recently saw this plastic folding boat called the porta-bote. Has
anyone here built one before? I'm planning on buying some poly-pro to
build one tomorrow, but definitely need some dimensions. Anyone know
where to start?

I have some CAD experience and am thinking of using some sort of sheet
metal application to make a 3D model, but it's all up in the air because
I don't know how to make the plastic bend naturally on the program. I'm
thinking just improvising but want to imitate the same profile of the
boat seeing as it seems to run really well on the water the way it is now.

Thanks for reading this.

The Porta Boat (Bote?) uses plastic hinges to allow it bend and fold
up. I don't know much more than that. The plastic is fairly thick
(1/4"?) or so.

Hi, Alex,

There are several mailing lists devoted to Porta-Bote owners and discussions
, ,
. Sandy, the owner, is very accessible at (650)

There's a recent thread about them over in rec.boats.cruising...

Hey Alex! Did you build it yet?
If you are still here I think I have some plans I picked up on how to
make one of Poly sheet, canvas, rubberized glue, and wood... Get with
me off list, at smallboats.com if you need me to look in the archives.
They are out there on the net somewhere too, that's where I got them.

Hey there thanks but I'm looking for a folding boat... I can get any
small boat really cheap but none that fit in an apartment.

You might try this web site:

It is an interesting design. I spoke with several people who own one, and
they are uniformly happy with their purchase.

I actually saw the folding canoe at the same show where I saw the
folding bote. I like the bote better because it can hold more people and
a bigger motor.

I'll build the canoe if I can just find plans for it though... But I am
looking for PLANS that I can rip off of someone. Not to sell, obviously...
